There is a lot to unpack here. Landry Kiffin, Lane’s daughter, attends Ole Miss but has a boyfriend at LSU. It was Landry who convinced her dad to stay at Ole Miss to keep the family together. Oddly enough, I think a father’s love of his daughter is going to be the determining factor here.

So based on that, WHAT?
He takes the LSU job?
Me, I am simply weary and bewildered…
I just wish we had a viable “PLAN B”—But we do not.
(Everyone ELSE has SEVERAL, it seems—Even LSU…)
I THINK that in “LANE’S WORLD” (cue the old SNL “Wayne & Garth crazy chorus!”) this might well have been EASY, a SLAMDUNK for UF—but NOW, well, SOMEBODYS are gonna get hurt (note intentional plural)—and we could EASILY be among them!
Wish a LOT of things, but now that we are here:
WISH we had a functional “BRAINTRUST”.
WISH we had an AD with vision rather than his head up his a**.
I could go on—into all the sadly unfortunate political realities of current state of our STATE!
However, “reality” dictates our somehow turning away, preparing for disappointment, pain…and another GENERATION
as “THE SLEEPING GIANT” once more??!
“Oh I hope NOT!”

Why would he go to LSU? To have the governor up his @$$? Then again the Florida Governor isn't much better. Didn't he "encourage" to vote down a possible UF presidental candidate because he didn't like his views?

EXACTLY (and “RIGHT ON!” to that last point in particular!)…
The fact that step-by-step POLITICS has weedled its way into ANY of this may be the last straw—damn close, at any rate.
I STILL feel, PREFER to feel that it comes down to an emotional decision, one involving his longtime emotional identification with the Florida job (along with his (“ex”?, “once and future”?) wife’s personal AND family’s long connection with UF), and/or at the same time his attachment to what he has created at Ol Miss being still unfinished…That all the rest fades into the background, pales in comparison compared to these two choices at the forefront of Lane’s consciousness when it all comes down to IT.

(On the eve of weekend of Tennessee game…)
Look: We aren’t gonna GET Lane…We better somehow come up with an exciting alternative candidate—or rather SCOTT STRICKLIN (and/or whomever wields enough power over there to override his next costly misjudgment) better do so—PRONTO, or we may well find ourselves out in the howling emptiness of irrelevancy for upwards of another generation!
Make no mistake—that is what we are flirting with now, are practically there ALREADY!
We were (STILL ARE) prepared to throw a blank check and agree to practically any concession at “that guy”; is there no one out there who is so interesting and promising an alternative that won’t listen (and consider) the same—someone that might similarly excite the fans and help us redefine our program and it’s possible futures??!
OK—No one has so far proposed, indeed even MENTIONED such a recognized and/or celebrated individual.
But that doesn’t mean they do not EXIST.
Not simply because the likes of Stricklin or the multitude of empty-headed, gum-flapping go-alongs in the media say so.
Unfortunately, it would likely take some modicum of brains, guts and imagination at this point. I guess THAT is WAY too much to expect here.
One more thing:
Am I the only person here in Gator Nation who has had at least the niggling germ of a thought, in some small and secret corner of their minds in the midst of this chaos, even as more and more self-contradictory headlines continue to emerge to be thrown on the acceleratingly growing pile of headlines, the idea that maybe “none of this is quite ‘OK’ after all”…??!
That maybe WE need to be “reassessing” exactly what we are SELLING OURSELVES HERE?
There are very few Gators I’VE talked to who weren’t at “FIRE STRICKLIN!” before they got to that point regarding Billy. And yet, after essentially and in every meaningful way getting us INTO this quagmire, HE’S STILL THERE, in charge of leading the search and eventually HIRING the key to our future.
That make any sense—any sense AT ALL?…
When he whiffs on Lane, what then? Do we suddenly awaken, dazed and confused?
DO WE FINALLY COME TO OUR COLLECTIVE SENSES??!
Yes, there is still a theoretical “way past and OUT”—the one vain hope that we ALL cling to:
Somehow it all turns AGAIN, that the above “WHEN” turns out in truth to be an “IF”—the one that goes OUR way after all:
Lane comes to UF and we happily, crazily go from THERE—and all the chaotic dominoes fall accordingly.
That is what each camp clings to now.
The only clear choice I can see, feel, personally long for at THIS point is any eventual THOROUGH HOUSE-CLEANING, starting right THERE, at AD.
None of which can or will change the past or much affect events already well in motion…
From here we can but watch , learn, plan and prepare—prepare to be READY.
It’d be so great to “BE READY” for a change—as FANS to be able to sit back and watch in relaxed, anticipatory satisfaction as our Coach and team comes together, and a desired, envisioned, even (heaven forbid) PLANNED FOR RESULT ensues!
We need to get back THERE, anyway

Late Friday, Nov. 21…
I wanna make sure I get this in, on the record before anything actually materializes:
Even as a Gator who sees him as the BEST FIT FOR US BY FAR, I am beginning to sour on this whole Lane Kiffen hire.
The ONLY reason I would still gladly (yes, GLADLY) sign him if he came around soon, freely choosing us after ALL, IS because of what a good fit I have recognized him to be from the start. We’d WIN—and it’d be a whole lotta fun DOING IT, too: Running up scores on rivals after trolling them all week, then laughing at his gloating zingers walking off the field…The very picture of an exaggerated caricature of “Lane doing Steve”!
But all this “subsequent extracurricular activity” has finally begun to poison even MY anticipation. If it weren’t for my suspicions that a lot of it at least COULD be courtesy of nefarious super-agent Jimmy Sexton, giving Lane some explicable cover here, good possibility I’d already be there.
But the latest stories involving tales of Nick Sabin somehow “advising” him, encouraging a decision for LSU—well, the whole idea pisses me off SO badly that I realized I HAD to just shut it DOWN:
If there were ANYONE else even CLOSE I’d say it clearly right out loud.
But there ain’t, so I am stuck with accepting him warmly, happily if he comes to Gainesville after all—tell ourselves the rest was all BS, “the way things ARE NOWADAYS”.
If he stays at Ol’ Miss, well, I’ll have a bit of a “split reaction”: One part relief and FIVE parts “Then ya damn well just shoulda said and DONE that in the FIRST PLACE, dude!”
But that THIRD choice, with all its MASSIVE “bs’n’baggage”—That is gonna royally P ME OFF!
It might take a while (I mean, we are gonna be WAY up Sh*t’s Creek for who knows HOW long before we are finally once again in position to make things right)—but “MAKIN’ it right”, punishing everyone we end up deciding to blame, not merely reveling in our own eventual success but making sure there come moments when it is at their direct expense—That and MORE will be an underlying driving force in our dedicated rise and return.
And then, y’all will PAY.

(No resolution…Big surprise. Another week and a day, minimum—For Gators, best to ignore everything but our own ongoing immediate (albeit mainly meaningless) team activities and game outcomes against two rivals to finish out the season’s play…)
I dunno HOW we lost site of it:
The GATOR-HATERS have been out there IN FORCE seemingly my whole damn LIFE!
So it is that when I talk about “makin’ ‘em PAY”, I’m NOT just talking about the latest little cabal of specific individuals at LSU, ESPN (SCREW YOU, Nick Saban!!!), our lately all too comfortable and satisfied rivals (Putin’ on the pounds, there, Kirby?), and so on…
For as long as I can remember we’ve been getting it from all SIDES, from the NCAA to the TV Networks and media loudmouths (You TOO, Paul Finebaum!). I could go on, but all that just comprises mainly SYMPTOMS arising out of long time unaddressed root causes.
ONE part of Lane’s recent performance I can totally relate to: I am in strong favor of our next Coach, indeed EVERY MEMBER OF UF’s VARIOUS REPRESENTATIVE GROUPS, henceforth obstructing the smooth flow of self-congratulatory bs they regularly indulge in. Far too often it has ended up being at our own expense: It is time we STOPPED PLAYING THEIR GAME…
Stopped playing NICE.
Billy Napier was invariably “nice”. Look where it got him.
LOOK WHERE IT GOT US!
It may be time to THINK CONTRARIAN.
Fully FLIP THE SCRIPT:
Cut the GORDONIAN KNOT (again: check your Greek Mythology—it’ll be filed under “Alexander the Great”…).
My main point here of course comes down to it being a time for big moves, the large symbolic gesture:
To find ourselves on a new path, in a new reality, a true GAME CHANGER is required.
Lane fit because he was the one candidate who filled that bill, “checked the boxes”.
Failing that, we either find some as yet unseen alternative, or we are lost—fooling ourselves if we think any of these other “gray men” will accomplish anything but “fill space while we hope the world eventually turns our way”.
I suppose I am asking any and/or all here now, even calling it out into the darkness of a presently empty-seeming universe, “IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE??!”

The clearest message I am getting is in our numbers here at “GE”:
Over the last few weeks since Billy’s firing our numbers have been startlingly higher than average—but even more suddenly, in the last few days they have dropped WAY down:
They are currently generally bottoming out…maybe a dozen guests in the mid-evening.
Hell, they weren’t much higher than that during last night’s game against Tennessee!
Not a huge shock or anything…
I’m just finding a certain possible “deeper meaning between the lines”:
Y’ALL feel it TOO.
That sinking feeling as vain hope turns to pessimism, the anticipation of pending bad news.

Rumors are just rumors. Every sports expert from On3 to Ali Peek claims to have an inside track. Granted, Ali Peek admits that there is a possibility that Lane Kiffin lied to her source. On3 just reads the tea leaves like the rest of us, but they hide the best rumors behind paywalls. The betting odds are frozen here with Kiffin at -120.

Yeah--between this surreal scheduling monstrosity, and ONE GUY="Agent to the Stars", we have The Perfect Storm of unbalanced absurdity (or is that "absurd imbalance"?
All I know is that it just makes no sense and is unfair to everyone EXCEPT Jimmy Sexton.
(I was going to add "and his clients" there, but seeing how it has a bunch of his "lesser contenders" bottlenecked behind Lane, and LANE likely blocked from "seeing himself leading his present team through the playoffs, THEN choosing his "team of the future"--in other words, "having his cake and EATING it TOO"), you'd have to say that Jimmy's clients are getting RICHER, but NOT necessarily getting much in the way of dignity, honor, or personal control.
No matter what anyone SAYS, money is still ruling decisions and OVERruling emotions at this point--elsewise anyone of them, starting with Lane in particular, would just dig in their heels and say, "Here's what I want--and it involves a NUMBER of details besides merely just "How much for ME???"
And perhaps that in fact is in truth taking place--there HAVE been some "quieter players" who are known to actually be "at the table"--NOT just watching, listening, guessing, imagining, and babbling online: We've heard progressively LESS from the Gator braintrust of late--and NOTHING at ALL out of this "Turnkey" powerhouse in particular, whom we've paid a lot of money to actually ACCOMPLISH something--something along the lines of "getting who we really want and need", as I understand it.
So here we are back where this all started weeks ago:
We wait and SEE, like everyone else.

Things have managed to get more ridiculous—extreme to the point of absurdity.
Have you heard or read of some of the latest “reports”?
(I can only see them as “individuals’ inventive RUMORS”…)
“De Boer jumps to PSU, whereupon LANE takes the now-open Alabama job.”
Overnight there were suddenly a string of others addressing the resulting further consequences of that and MORE—but THAT one, leading off a slew of such “headlines/clickbait” online, just threw me into “AW, F*CK IT-Land”!
I mean, THAT’S IT…I cannot continue to even participate in the DISMISSAL of this foolishness.
If there turns out to be any semblance of TRUTH, let alone REALITY to ANY of this now I may HAVE to wave a white flag and walk away!
As it is, even granting my already low impression and expectations regarding the media and what passes for “broadcast journalism” nowadays, as new low is being established.
Never mind “truth”, what about “insight”? “Taste”? “LOGIC”??!
OK—Some may well be asking, “Where the hell have YOU been, DRU?”, and have a point.
“Not paying proper attention…”, obviously: If this is ANYTHING but various sidelined personalities making idiotic public claims to regain some portion of that dubious “social media spotlight”, then there is zero value in paying the slightest bit of attention to ANY of it—and we damn well may have crossed THAT line DAYS ago!

If you have to follow the rumors, try to follow the more logical sources. If you look at my candidate list, I bound the possibilities with the realities of contracts, consider implications of coaches already at a perfect fit, and postulate on fit at each school.

Kalen DeBoer's contract with Alabama, which runs through 2031, includes a hefty $4 million buyout clause for the 2025 season if he were to terminate it early, making a move to Penn State financially prohibitive for both him and the Nittany Lions, who would likely need to cover that cost. Beyond the monetary barrier, DeBoer has invested heavily in Alabama's program since succeeding Nick Saban in 2024, achieving an 8-2 record this year and building momentum with top recruiting classes, which aligns with his long-term vision at one of college football's elite programs. Recent rumors linking him to Penn State have been swiftly shut down by insiders close to the coach, underscoring his commitment to turning around the Crimson Tide amid their high expectations.

Dan Lanning's contract with Oregon, extended through the 2030 season in March 2025, features a steep $20 million buyout if he were to leave voluntarily, rendering a move to Penn State or Alabama financially unfeasible for the Ducks' rising star coach who earns over $10 million annually. At just 39, Lanning has transformed Oregon into a perennial contender, boasting a 35-6 record in three seasons, a Big Ten title in their 2024 debut, and a No. 1 CFP seed last year, all while prioritizing family stability in Eugene over the carousel's temptations.

There is one element of all this silliness that both ANGERS and strangely ENCOURAGES me:
The whole gamut of media spokespersons all seem so THREATENED by the idea of Kiffen leaving Ole Miss and coming to Florida…They HATE the very notion, have lined up to condemn the idea from the moment it came up and have uniformly (and in growing numbers) raised a myriad of arguments and rationalizations that seem designed to convince Lane himself.
Yes, it certainly DOES piss me off…but it also has come to possibly support a strong underlying COUNTER-argument:
I think that behind all this may be that very idea of Kiffen coming to embody a kind of “latter day manifestation of Spurrier”—These folks utterly DREAD the inherent loss of influence and control over the national CFB narrative that “Lane Kiffen leading the Florida Gators” inherently represents—and if Lane really HAS long identified with SS, maybe the cacophony of dismissals are nothing but further reinforcement for the inclination he has emotionally gravitated to in the first place.
Of course, I am merely tossing forward my OWN “counter argument”, emerging as it does from the pure frustration, fatigue and mistrust of all we as Gators have had to endure, even BEFORE finding ourselves involved in this carnival of stupidity.

Mainstream sports media is scared of Florida with a good coach. The Gator program has everything else.

Talent? The Gators land a top-15 class even with crappy coaches and losing seasons!

Fan attendance? The stadium sells out even with crappy coaches and losing seasons!

Television viewers? The Gators consistently rank in the top 10 for viewership even with crappy coaches and losing seasons!

Add in good coaching and, soon, a general manager, and this program is dangerously good again.

Well said, as usual my friend.
I know you are right in the long run...I just hope and pray we can all experience at least the realistic hope of an upward trend anytime SOON.

Though it pains me all the more to dwell on this, AND in addition does little to improve the situation in any way, having had if anything certain impressions only further reinforced I feel compelled to share them--unpalatable as they may be:
According to the one individual whom I know and understand to be a longtime "influencer" and confidant among those whom at least in turn participate in the discussions that ultimately lead to "who decides and what are the parameters?" regarding the direction and limiting factors in each phase of most ongoing UF Football decisions (while frankly conceding that the best I can do, despite a longtime personal connection, is to patiently wait until HE, though well aware of my great interest, is ready to tell me something, ANYTHING), even now, at this rather late stage in a confusingly vague process, having only just guessed this somewhat disappointingly anxious and frustrating confirmation of what solely my paranoia had begun to conclude on its own...
To wit: That it was OUR OWN PEOPLE, the UF "Search Team" led by Scott Stricklin, with the close paid partnership of this "Turnkey" organization and the supposed close oversight snd scrutiny of a number of wealthy, long-involved and active boosters, had THEMSELVES pulled out of negotiations with Kiffen and his agent due to a supposed "impression", on the part of Stricklin (who had long resisted Lane's hiring prior to this latest sequrnce) and the dreaded "certain others" (still unidentified) that "HE had lost interest", that "HIS people, suddenly more difficult to meet with, appear to be themselves moving on..."
In other words, Stricklin and his anti-Kiffen faction, despite a promised intent to fulfill a consensus (built around a number of highly wealthy and influential boosters, not to mention the bulk of Gator FANS solidly behind them) whom supported a clearly stated policy of "Lane or BUST!"/"Kiffen and ONLY Kiffen until HE comes right out and tells us NO!", had basically "moved on in THEIR search", without any such clear negation from Lane, based on a claim that THEY felt like "KIFFEN wasn't as interested as before"!
Now, it IS the opinion of a number of angry and frustrated individuals who've thus far been forced into a "wait and see what actually HAPPENS"-box (folks I personally completely agree with) that THIS ALONE, the above sneaky "end-run AROUND his earlier promises" hereby immediately qualifies Scott Stricklin for firing RIGHT NOW'...
BUT it sure LOOKS like we are going to have to wait until he sticks us with another failed hire at Head Football Coach before we'll finally be RID of him...and THAT of course implies ANY real change won't come, will not even BEGIN until AFTER we make another mediocre "gray man" a RICH man while he drives our program DEEPER into ignominy.
How long can we go, hemorrhaging money paying for past failures rather than for future greatness, before our growing irrelevance lodges us FOREVER in that dreaded "Second Tier", where "The Best", whether Coach or player, begin to do THEIR best to avoid?

One other thing, though:
If Lane WERE to just stay at Ole Miss for now after all, it might well leave certain future options still open—got he AND us…
Consider this: He stays there, gets a win or two in this and maybe even ANOTHER CFB Playoff round, but no further over the next 3 or 4 seasons. Meanwhile, our next bland “bare improvement of a Coach” doesn’t even get us THAT far.
By the time we get to that “3 or 4 seasons down the line” with the above general results, Stricklin’s gone and this whole situation is revisited—only with little in the way of “hard feelings“ or “situational obstacles” as before, THIS time “the FIT” might actually better work.
(However, if he LEAVES the Rebels and goes to LSU now, I sense the dye will be cast—and by the time the more complicated betrayals and resentments, real or imagined, might eventually be resolved, too much time and distance between us may well still remain…THAT “potential destiny” may well be denied us BOTH after all.)

Oh—and I left something OUT of last night’s harangue regarding Liar Stricklin and his paid-for-with-UF-money-coconspirators-at-Turnkey’s efforts to guarantee the death of Gator Football:
This emerging canard that somehow Lincoln Riley “interviewed poorly with us” is every bit the large lump of excrement it appears to be:
There was no “INTERVIEW”—not as such, anyway.
One more lie being peddled by this nefarious group of “Gator Traitors” at the heart of our program whom have no other goal but to gut all that was once good and decent at the core of this once great team’s past, present and future.
I am SICK AT HEART at the sinking realization of our true current plight.
