My list is simple: Lane Kiffin or I just do not care. Kiffin is not a guaranteed lock, but at the very least it will be fun while he is around for 40 games. I think his floor will be higher than Dan Mullen's, as will his ceiling. At this point, I will take that. Give me 9 wins a season.

Well said, my Gator brother.
(But, depending on what kind of net roster-attrition we suffer in the likely long wait before a decision is made--ITSELF depending to a large extent on how far Ole Miss goes in the Playoffs, which in turn becomes LIKELIER with a win against the Sooners Saturday--one reason Lane IS held in such high regard by Gators of ALL stripes at this point is the pervasive feeling among most of us that, given time--and NOT a whole LOT of it, either--with his vision, energy, eye-for-talent, and Florida his hunting ground, Lane can build, maintain and LEAD a hand-picked, fun-to-watch Gator Program to a consistently HIGHER-than-9-win record almost EVERY year for however long he cares to stay in the game.
AND he'll meanwhile drive the REST of the South absolutely batshit CRAZY as he smirks his way through the headlines year-ROUND.
Just like one SS used to do.
Talk about "restoring ORDER" to college FOOTBALL...)

Here are the latest odds for next Gator head coach according to ESPN and BetKings. Refer to my earlier list. I reiterate my criteria: proven record (must win 60% of games in recent positions or show a positive trend), and proven staff (continuously upgrading). Bonus points for having a big personality.

Lane Kiffin is the only one here who checks all the boxes, including the bonus. If he brought Charlie Weis and Pete Golding as experienced OC and DC, this staff would inherit a roster (if they wanted) that was a complete upgrade over what they had at Ole Miss, with the exception of quarterbacks. Trindidad Chambliss and Austin Simmons would likely push DJ Lagway to transfer, unless Lagway gets his s*** together over the next 5 games.

Jeff Brohm could fit, but he would he be willing to fire or demote his brother at OC if his scheme does not translate at Florida?

James Franklin is not a good fit, but he would be a stable hire.

Eli Drinkwitz is basically the Diet Coke version of Dan Mullen, but with more common sense. He has shown that he is willing to let go of play calling duties so he can focus on the entire game--unlike Billy Napier.

Jedd Fisch, Brent Key, and Alex Golesh are just names to throw into the discussion.

The one thing that concerns me with Fisch is that his overall record hasn't been impressive--AND there appears a pattern there of "slow starts" in that department with each move.
Brohm seems a "promising up'n'comer"--but do we even WANT another "budding outsider from a "lower tier conference" coming in to "learn on the job" again this time??! He's reportedly "'generally described as UNLIKEABLE", too--a potential impediment to recruiting longterm.
Golesh falls into that "ANOTHER lower-tier experiment??!" too...
You've already pretty well NAILED Eli's accumulated "potential negatives and unprovens".
NONE are a total, inarguable "slam dunk", but at this point LANE is far and away the "man-of-the-MOMENT"--The closest thing we have now to both "exciting" AND "safe"...
I just don't know that we will GET him--and the way things are playing out, he can likeky continue "playing games" here for weeks, even MONTHS.
Which tells ME that maybe even LANE doesn't really know just what he will ultimately choose to do.
That is all true, even "FAIR"--but maybe, in the final analysis, that just will not WORK for US here.. BUT then, where does THAT leave us?
Who DOES really WORK??!
(And it ain't just Stricklin who MUST "get it RIGHT" this time:
It is an inescapeable crossroads for Florida FOOTBALL this time as well: Our longterm relevance, any realistic hope for our return to the "Elite" depends upon our getting the CHOICE, THE GUY, RIGHT THIS TIME!)

The game has changed, so nobody is a slam dunk hire. We have to resort to the basic metrics that have withstood the test of time:
- overall record
- continued growth
- success at each level

Only Lane Kiffin and Jon Gruden check off the boxes

Yes...and Gruden comes with too much baggage for too many people: There'd be SO MANY extreme nay-sayers that if/when he were to faceplant, Stricklin KNOWS he'd be FAST HISTORY.
KIFFEN, on the other hand, is as close to a current "consensus" among Gator Nation that even were he to fail, it would be difficult even for fickle younger Gator fans to ignore what would STILL be recent memory and immediately pile onto Sticklin over that one.
So there it is...
But WHAT IF HE DECLINES?
So we are back where we started here.

...So for me, a little after noon Central I am watching Ol' Miss at Oklahoma, where it's 10-all early in the 2nd quarter...
And I have to admit:
This is a strange situation...I'm not sure how to do feel, who to root for here. I mean, for US, it's all about "what helps convince Lane to come on OVER?".
Certainly winning here probably contributes greatly to our having to extend our WAITING TIME before the Rebels' season might finally be over. So I came in somewhat inclined to root AGAINST the Coach we most wanna bring in on OUR side. However, midway through quarter #2 the Rebels seem to be taking contrveryl of this one after the safety and kickoff run back to midfield.
But some questionable play calling has them bogging down in the redzone and having to settle for a chip shot 3-pointer...and Lane ckedrky KNOWS he blew it, left important points on the field.
But if anything, this is one more thing I LIKD zbout this guy over Billy:
Instead of rationalizing and preparing his excuses for his presser after the game (a la Billy), LANE quickly and clearly reevaluates and presumably LEARNS. He certainly ISN'T concerned with "immediate strategic ass-covering".
Interestingly, so far it is the somewhat maligned REBEL DEFENSE that is getting the job done, getting the lead and do far KEEPING it.
Now driving inside Sooner territory with 2 minutes left in the half.
As I say, like the Coach, so I am unsure how I zm supposed to feel here.
BUT it looks like Ol Miss is gonna head to the half with SOME sort of lead--How lathe is the only question. They are at tgec2 yard line with a minute plus left...TOUCHDOWN, Rebels.
21-10 with 46 seconds left in 2nd quarter.

Watching Lane, he sure doesn't LOOK like a guy who cares about ANYONE or ANYTHING but his current team, players, what and who they are and where they are headed.
I KNOW these coaches are NOT natural born "method actors", but at the same time this is a role they find themselves operating in with some familiarity at different points over the years in their developing careers, too.
I suppose, when all is said and done, I guess I hope they lose at the end--it is (selfishly speaking) better for us I think (at the very least better for our ongoing anxiety, having to '"wait'n'see" until AFTER the Rebels are no longer playing) if they were to lose this one, pivotal as it is to BOTH team's potential post-season placement.
(GEEZ, Lane makes a couple of poor 4th down calls on consecuyive drives here...Only somewhat saved by his often moribund defense, of all things.
It seems like they have this game well in hand--but haven''t quite fully asserted themselves.
But the officials come you theircrescue either a terrible call against the Sooners defense.
We've seen these regularly around college football so far this season--suspiciously timed and hugely result-affecting otherwise questionable calls at crucial points in key games.)
But yeah--you cab SEE how thus Rebel defehse has kept the team from really establishing themselves as one of the "top tier SEC Teams".
25-20 Ol' Miss now...
Like last week against UGA, they seem to be fading in the 2nd half; 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
I am still torn--it may well still be "better" for US were they to LOSE this and (among other things) potentially hasten the "day of reckoning" as far as a when Lane MAKES "The Decision" (and Who KNOWS? Maybe the NATURE of that decision too?)...but I STILL have some difficulty with rooting heavily against our "possible future Coach"...
But now OU scores another TD to take the lead.
Sooners looking to possibly win this one in similar fashion to how WE beat 'em LAST season.
But plenty of time left here for them to take this one back as the 3rd quarter winds down from here.

Entertaining game, from non-fan, non-bettor's point-of-view. I guess I'd probably be best off just letting go, not caring enough to follow it closely:
Too much mounting opportunity for Rebels to pull this one out and, no matter what, ultimately make the playoffs and keep us in dangerously exposed (and intolerably miserable) limbo aiming to see if we should be waiting on Lane or "settling for something/SOMEONE less FITTING"...
31-26 Rebels now.
Hell of a game--back and forth...but it neither supports our supposed "best interests" in how it looks to be turning out, NOR has Lane exactly dazzled us with his play calling--Though it HAS had plenty if examples of his flexibility, willingness to try new things and above all GOING FOR IT, taking risks, CHASING THE WIN!,
AND THEIR SPECIAL TEAMS appear to force the turnover on the punt return.
This could be a major game changer late, obviously.
You play this way, wide open and taking risks, and DESPITE mistakes and sloppiness you get CHANCES TO WIN!
And that is what is happening here to Ol' Miss.
So though it likely means a longer wait (AND even the possibility that it COULD lead to REDUCED chances of him choosing us), I personally have overall seen ADDITIONAL reasons why I prefer to see HIM walking our sidelines during games.

Gonna go for a "tour", do some switching around to get a bit of late overview if some of the other interesting games today.
(Even WITH Ol Miss doing their best to let OU back in it here late...)

Hell of a game--back and forth...but the outcome would seem to almost GUARANTEE our now for SURE having to wait until at LEAST the early rounds of the playoffs before Lane vis free to make that "DECISION"...
...And by the way:
Weird as it felt trying to figure out how one was supposed to FEEL in watching our hoped-for Coach lead his current charges against the team they were at this point likeliest to compete against for the final spot, how strange and complex a squeeze will we feel in facing how to approach PLAY, negative OR positive when our GATORS are up against the REBELS?
Our future depends on getting it all correctly:
Who and/or WHAT we want vs how best to GET it--which may or MAY NOT be the same or the OPPOSITE of what we need to have happen in order to eventually WIN--Shich, fir our current immediate purposes, means getting Lane to join us as OUR next Head Coach.
Aw, F-it!
I am thoroughly SICK of this whole self-devouring process after just a few HOURS of it!
ENOUGH!
SOMEONE ELSE can mess with it, try to untangle its endless înticasues and implications today and in the next few'weeks..
Unless I get some satisfactory answers in subsequent play today, I MAY just grab a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and watch the World Series tonight instead!

As for where WE stand now, I suppose all we CAN do is relax and settle in for "the long haul":
We pretty well HAVE to stay on Lane as far and AWAY our first, second, WHATEVER choice--in other words, HE'S the one we want and we STAY on him until he gives a clear and final, inarguable "No!" (and one accompanied by a big contract extension where he's AT as well)...and more than ever it now LOOKS like unless he chooses to shut it all down earlier, that will mean we WAIT---All the way until whenever their now progressively likelier playoff run ends (when and IF it does--and if it goes THAT long, do our prospects, whatever they are, then begin to fade?)
I myself have this growing feeling he ISN'T coming, but we have little practical choice given the (for US) lesser alternatives but to let it all play out, to hold out for the one guy we want until all possibility for it to happen is gone. Until THEN:
We wait and SEE.

Well, after the Sooners game, Kiffen stalked down to the end of the field where the Ol Miss fans were seated, threw his hands in the air and then pointed at the ground--As if to say (according to some analysts anyway) "I'm staying right here!"...Hell, one tool on Rivals (in another eg of why I DON'T LIKE OR FOLLOW them, and though I do sometimes check them out for a few moments, check on a few of their latest "stronger", sometimes even outrageous claims, I will NEVER give them a "Like", nor join their "Subscriber" list) one of their smarmy smiling idiots even repeatedly reported Lane as declaring right out loud,( "I'm staying right here!", just entirely based on that gesture.
Now, ignoring the blatant irresponsible inaccuracy of converting a gesture to an actual QUOTED REMARK, I don't know if that was just Lane excited and in the moment, an impulsive expression of his feelings right then, or WHAT, but as I said earlier, I already HAD this growing feelimg that he just wasn't leaning towards ultimately coming over to Florida in ANY event--but as I say these guys on Rivals went on gleefully at some length about how they "wouldn't be at all surprised" if Lane wasn't getting a gigantic KICK out of stringing UF along with the sole intention of "in effect trolling an SEC rival", doing damage to a lateral program that has damaged the Rebels before and will no doubt be in position to do so again, soon and in the future...That he "doesn't owe them or anyone ELSE in the SEC anything" but his supposed continued manipulative efforts to seize on opportunities to hurt them in whatever ways they offer him the opportunity to DO so...
SO: IS he f*cking with us that way--purposefully drawing this out with the intention of maximizing its negative impact on our program's health, happiness and FUTURE?
I would HOPE that the moment he was SURE he was staying where he was, for the health and well-being of BOTH programs and their fans he would simply say so and let both (not to mention himself and his own family--along with a basic sense of honor and decency, if anything like that is left in the game) properly MOVE on, with basic dignity intact on all fronts.
Or am I fooling myself? Or is he just a selfish and vindictive prick--and exactly why we want and need him on OUR side? OUR "vindictive prick".
I don't know--but I just can't get real jazzed about most of the REST of the bunch whose names are in the blender for consideration if It ISN'T gonna be Lane.
The more I consider the matter in this "ultimately CYNICAL" light, the more I myself come around to YOUR point, @Escambia94, :
Maybe we just say "To HELL with EVERYONE!" (INCLUDING a revealed vindictive manipulator thus unmasked in Kiffen) and just go out and sign Gruden after all...If it were in January after being left standing alone at both the CFB hiring AND recruiting alters, it MIGHT BE our OWN "vindictive turn around"--a chance to do something REALLY different with a Coach who brings his own "aggressively NASTY approach" to extreme, innovatively visionary offensive (in every WAY) football...and if it came down to it (especially in the above way), we'd for SURE take great pleasure in running it UP on the Rebels every chance we got--"Hang half a hunnert on 'em!" on OUR way to all the NATTYS Lane WOULDN'T be getting, regardless of HOW comfortable he might be finishing a mainly irrelevant career in Mississippi.
(Yeah, you're damn RIGHT how angry I'd be to learn it was all an effort to screw us maximally after all, as he did what he KNEW he meant to do all along, just as the Rivals guys and others are suggesting were (and are) his true intentions and motives all along).
I don't know if Gruden even has any SHOT at being offered the UF Head Coaching job.
Not yet.
Not with Strickliin as our AD.
But then again, things could all be sitting bathed in a different light by JANUARY--and those powerful backroom boosters might bring a new attitude, new pressure to bear if they see all this as I am now describing here by then.

Did anyone see Oklahoma fans in the stands trolling Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss players by giving him the Gator Chomp? That was interesting. Hundreds, maybe thousands of Sooners doing the Gator Chomp just to get into heads of the Ole Miss players.

I missed that--sorry to say...
You think maybe Lane DID--and was reacting to THAT when he stomped down to the visitors' end of the field after the final gun and performed his much-talked-about little charade?

Okay.
I am just about DONE with this whole self-punishment scene, the "push/pull", "does he?/doesn't he?", "Will she?/Won't she?" pathos and whine-sad romance that is our seemingly more and more doomed pursuit of Lane Kiffen.
WE. ARE. FLORIDA.
The cupboard ain't bare--but even if it were, that is still A FACT. The "RIGHT" person can still come in here and do special things, soon put himself AND this program at the very CENTER of CFB once more.
If anything, the much discussed changes to circumstances in the college game, in addition to presenting more teams with chances to strike lightening every now and then where they may not have before ALSO presents a Florida with more chances than EVER to build back BIG TIME in a big fat RUSH TOO!
(You may come to rue that very reality in the not too distant future, should you make the wrong decision, Mr. KIFFEN...OR conversely make it work FOR you AND us.)
But I refuse to chase this thing like a lovelorn stalker any longer!
I wish I had more faith in the folks (well, mainly that ONE "folk"/"folker" LOL) who in truth will make the call. But the truth is that "we, the Gator PEOPLE" are stuck with having little more to say or do than be vocal spectators who can only vote-with-our-wallets-and-feet, and THEN only AFTER-THE-FACT.
So where does that leave us?
Right this moment I have few answers...but I am working on it. I'm sure I'll have SOMETHING for y'all--It's my nature. I only hope it is something positive and constructive--and it comes to me (or, like a lucky blind man groping in a hurricane, it FINDS me) before another poor choice is foisted upon us.
Whether out of panic as time passes and rumor accumulates, or just our AD making another hastily self-serving crap deal based on insufficient data, this whole "Lane-Chase" stringing us out, plus a complete logjam of big open jobs, the two together converging to create confusion where CLARITY is the key to our future, the scene is rife for another mistake.
Hence, the choice that E-- suggests "slices the gordonian knot" (a la Alexander the Great--read your Greek classics) and simplifies the whole dilemma:
If NOT Lane, go GRUDEN.
For the moment, THAT is the closest thing I got to a solution.
Call it my current "Mantra".
It is ALL a gamble...
So let's go "ALL IN"--and LET iT RIDE.

(Important Sidenotes:
(1) Gruden is very likely a "TOTAL Stricklin Negatory".
(2) Latest sudden "Fast Company" in Gator Sweepstakes: Lincoln Riley
...and HE IS an Offense-guy who would check the "splashy headlines" box.
(3) I just don't wanna HEAR about "Brohm", "Fisch", or "Franklin" anymore...and even Drinkwitz seems more a "Lesser KIFFEN Settle".)
