SEC commissioner Greg Sankey stirred things up a little last week when he mentioned the possibility of the SEC Media Days moving away from Hoover, Ala.
You go, commish!
This is a league that is very SEC West-centric. The office of the SEC is in Birmingham which is a big reason why the meetings are there. It’s simply easier for everyone in the league office.
And the Wynfrey Hotel is a great spot for the event in terms of the amenities like the multiple meeting rooms and connection to the Galleria mall.
I’m not saying the SEC should abandon Hoover, but moving the SEC Media Days around would be good for the league. As he mentioned, there are 11 states that have SEC teams. Why does one state — one city — get the economic boom and free publicity annually?
Sankey did not ask, but I have some suggestions:
* Ponte Vedra. Seriously, if you had the Media Days at the Sawgrass Marriott, the media boys and girls would be begging the commissioner to have it there every year. It’s not about the golf course (OK, it is a little), it’s about the beautiful piece of property and easy access to numerous restaurants.
* Atlanta. The SEC title game is there and the reality is that even though there is an ACC team in the city, it’s more of an SEC city. You took away the hoops tourney, let’s give something back.
* Memphis. Beale Street. Fairly easy to get to from any SEC city. Let’s go.
* Hilton Head. Or Amelia Island. Or any place with a sea breeze. In other words, the opposite of Hoover.
