One Crazy Thought

I have spoken much about how close we are.
I have ALSO spoken here about how we “need that one guy”—and LATELY have said I didn’t necessarily think we needed that person ON THE PLAYING FIELD so much as part of our RECRUITING TEAM...
“We need a charisma-soaked, RECRUITING-MACHINE to go out there and talk Gator Football, specifically the way it will be under Dan Mullens in the years ahead!”:
I have the man. Tim Tebow.
Go ahead and laugh. It was my first thought too. And then I smiled. At the fiendish brilliance of it. Consider:
What is the currency sine quon non out there these days, the thing that SINGS AND SWINGS MORE THAN EVEN MONEY? Money can and will come later, with game and success and all the rest, but what Tebow has bucketloads of snd can easily share just by showing up in your town, at your school, and just appearing on CAMERA with you, is FAME? CELEBRITY—and in case you haven’t noticed, you can rub OFF a little game by proximity, but it is damn near IMPOSSIBLE TO BUY.
And that’s just the start of it. The man is fit, beautiful, KNOWS FOOTBALL AND IS A GATOR THROUGH AND THROUGH.
HIRE HIM, Dan Mullens. “Special Laison National Recruitment and Gator Offensive Spokesman”
Let the howling put downs (and enormous publicity furthering the EXACT EFFECT WE ARE EXPLOITING HERE) BEGIN...The “experts” will hate it...they’ll MURDER US—and do what?!!
They have never been our friends save for a few days when it suited them (go read them NOW if you wanna know the true contempt with which they have always covertly viewed us!).
The young PLAYERS out there will GET IT...more and more, they won’t just “come around”: Eventually they will notice, they will listen and watch—and they will absolutely flock to his side when he comes to them, comes to their towns, their campuses throughout NOT just FLORIDA (where we will win recruiting wars for YEARS TO COME—imagine YOUR mom and dad the day TT drops buy for a light lunch and a review of son’s highlight reel?!!) but the region, Hell, the whole damn NATION is his potential “recruiting territory”!
Think he’ll do it? It’d take the right pitch. But just the one—as opposed to all those hundred of futile, so far almost devoid-of-one-5-star ones that Mullens and Co. have more or less whiffed on! I even know em the tack to take...but I don’t wanna get bogged down in THAT.
Think about what I say here...Yes, it’ll sound like metaphorical satire at first. But let it roll around your mind a few days; begin to consider it seriously, as a genuine strategy...and remember: Ultimately, (1)THERE’S NO ONE LIKE HIM, and (2) ONLY WE CAN GET HIM (IF we do it right).
I will discuss EXACTLY how we go about it in a subsequent post—IF a serious discussion here actually comes around to the Idea.
    Have your laughs. Then:
Let’s go get our Symbolic Leader.

(Parenthetically, if all else fails, it sure looks like we got a winner brewing over in the CON-DOME...Not much consolation to ME, but to a lot of you the addition of Blacksheer looks to be fitting nicely from the start—we might at LEAST HAVE SOME ACTION AND ATTENTION COMING OUR WAY THIS SPRING...I’m figuring MORE LIKE THE GOOD OL’ DAYS come March—as in BOTH OUR HIGH-PROFILE PROGRAMS CLAWING BACK TO THE TOP NOT JUST FOR NATTIES BUT FOR SPOTLIGHTED ATTENTION ON BOTH programs!
Me, I’m content to see us back at the top of the SEC once more...BUT: we win the FOOTBALL Championship and are IN THE RACE TO TAKE THE DANCE AS WELL, well, we will be back in pretty heady company, with, um, now let’s see here...OURSELVES???
That would have a certain unique SWEETness...)

The good news is FSU fired their head coach so the Gators have an advantage in recruiting at least among the teams in the state though it depends who the SOW hires.

Seeing Tim Tebow, Laura Rutledge, Erin Andrews, Chris Doering, and Jesse Palmer on Saturdays and Sundays provides rather consistent advertising for Florida. I would not want to take any of them away from the national spotlight. Florida, FSU, and Miami are all having problems recruiting, because Clemson, Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, Louisville, and others are poaching our best high school kids from the best football high schools. Look at the Vanderbilt roster--they have more kids from St Thomas Aquinas than UF, FSU, and Miami combined!

I have no idea how to fix the recruiting, but I do know Tebow has better things to do.

What would help is seeing a Florida Alum do well in NFL. I know there's the Pouncey twins but probably be better if it was a skill position. No one other than the QBs and RBs care about OLs though the Front Office people should. Also competing for the SEC/National title would also help. That's the reason Clemson and Bama are getting players.

That would definitely help better than taking Florida alumni out of television. Unfortunately, we had a decade of mediocrity in college football that led to a decade of mediocrity in the NFL. Some of the best former Gators in the NFL are the ones that transferred and swear no allegiance to UF: Cam Newton, Janoris Jenkins, Jacoby Brissett.

Got news for y’all—tho some clearly prefer their preconceptions to what is actually developing behind the scenes, in the hope and yes, final effort to, gently as possible, pass on some info regarding important efforts at addressing an acknowledged (and all too obvious) lack, Coach Dan is well-aware of both that “lack” AND (if anything) of larger opportunities than ever developing for us to at least dominate IN-state recruiting, and has begun a quiet push within the Gator braintrust to see that exploited on as wide a scale as possible. NO move, avenue nor strategy is currently “off the table”.
The “Tebow Strategem”, while I admit to a great extent (like a lot of things I put out there—we can get all too bogged down in frustration as we tread CLOSE but still somehow find ourselves just scratching at the underside of “The True Elite” group still just above us—I put forward some ideas as much as anything to PROVOKE RESPONSE...I suppose I am TRYING to see us be more than “a few guys discussing the stats”!) was and is NOT something I ever thought would literally come to pass in literal form, the spirit of the idea (and certain manifestation in SOME form should NOT come as a huge shock at this point)
...What we CAN expect is SOME SET of aggressive moves to upgrade our recruiting efforts and general profile at all levels before this season has even ended. This will not be limited to the Head Coach himself; I believe he will be bringing in someone whose specific duties and acknowledged skills will include a growing reputation in that area in particular, among whatever OTHER title maybe attached or associated with their hiring.
We all know how huge this is; it may well be the difference between where we are now, and where we intend to BE:
To wit, finally to be included among that handful of “Elite Teams”, outside of which we are at present considered close but nonetheless still basically “outliers”.
If we wanna get there, who does not sense that here lies the KEY for us?

    PS
Personally, I care NOT A FIG for or about the inclusion of “Gator Personalities” among the “Expert Mouthpieces” among “Talking Heads” that blather all week and TRIPLE THAT on Saturdays!
In most cases, they merely WEAKEN their notability in such roles (though no doubt it is a nice little “career move”)...But in the case of a true Charismatic “Natural Born Leader” and true celebrity (like it or not) like TT, it is an utter WASTE of his talents and future.
In his case, I am not too concerned though—like water finding its own level, he will find his way—and our Head Coach is already discussing where that “level” and OURS will best and naturally flow together.

Oh really? Like another yapping face vying for attention each afternoon on one of the ESPN channels.
I got involved with Gator Envy as an ALTERNATIVE to all that blather!
Sigh. Maybe I just don’t belong in this discussion anymore, after all.
Certainly the hostility I sense at even the idea that there may be another way of looking at all this more and more saddens me. I of all people understand the frustration of our continued “close-but-no-cigar” reality, but do not feel that my efforts to “break-the-mold” of what seems in danger of becoming a “hidebound” effort to improve—but perhaps not ever quite BREAKING THROUGH, warrants shifting that frustration’s aim onto ME. Frankly, I don’t even begin to understand it—but have seen it happen elsewhere.
I like to think I offer something here; the moment I am convinced that a majority of y’all do not agree with that assumption, I’ll leave the site to YOU.

WHY would you remove them? Granted it does nothing to help the football program though having them would help the Broadcast program along with Stephanie Abrams (Weather Channel).
