Gainesville, FL University of Florida freshman Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for her play during the matches of February 12-18, the league announced Tuesday.
Alexander extended her singles winning streak to 12 in a row after posting two huge victories last week, helping the Gators defeat No. 22 Texas, 5-2, and No. 8 Miami, 4-3. Her 12-match win streak is the longest by a Gator this season.
Her thrilling 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 upset win over Miami's 56th-ranked Audrey Banada at the No. 2 position capped the Gator's 4-3 comeback and clinched the win against the Hurricanes. It was UF's second win this season over a top-10 ranked team. Alexander's win not only clinched the Gator's victory over Miami, it helped extended UF's home win streaks which now stand at 34 overall and 48 straight in regular-season matches.
In doubles action, Alexander and Diana Srebrovic teamed to provide the clinching point against Texas, 9-7, with the first two doubles matches having split.
Alexander improved to 7-0 in dual match singles action and sports a 6-1 doubles dual match record, with all being played at the No. 2 position.
The fourth-ranked Gators (7-0) return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, playing host to No. 11 Duke beginning at 1 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex.
