Las Vegas Bowl: Florida Gators vs Oregon State 12/17/22

The Florida Gators will take on the Oregon State Beavers for the first time in history on Saturday, December 17 at 11:30 AM. Billy Napier is 6-6/ 3-5 with the Gators, 46-19 overall. Jonathan Smith is 25-31 with the Beavers. The bowl payout is $2.9M per school. The Beavers opened up favored by 1 with the line growing to 10 and are the designated home team. The last time OSU won a bowl game was in 2013 when they beat Boise State 38-23 in the Hawaii Bowl. If the Beavers win it will give them 10 wins in a season for the third time in history (2000, 2006). OSU is 0-11-1 all time against the SEC in games that include LSU (0-4), UGA (0-1-1), UT (0-2), UK (0-1), and Auburn (0-1). Last year's Las Vegas Bowl was a boring defensive battle that ended up with Wisconsin defeating Arizona State 20-13.

The roster will of available players for the Las Vegas Bowl will be rather thin. The 85-man roster now stands at 67 on day 1 of the transfer portal. So far 14 players have entered the portal, and we expect another dozen to enter.

Some of these (some GOOD ones) we KNOW are gone...One obvious big question, the proverbial "elephant in the middle of the room":
"Who's our likely QB in the Bowl Game?"

Jack Miller III and Max Brown are the only remaining scholarship QBs. Jack Anders and Kyle Engel are walk-ons. Jack Miller has a career stat line of 7 completions on 14 attempts for 101 yards (2 games, @ Indiana and vs Akron in 2021). He also has a total of 7 rushing attempts (2 in 2020 and 5 in 2021) for a total of 22 yards and 1 TD. The other QBs in aggregate have zero attempts. If Jack Miller's thumb is healed, then he is the starter. If he is still not healthy, then Max Brown will be the QB. Anders or Engel could be made available in emergency, but I believe Engel graduates this week and might not be available.

Update: Former walk-on Jack Anders announced he will enter the portal as a graduate transfer with 2 years of eligibility. Anders stated on Twitter that he will remain with the team through the bowl game.

The only common opponent between UF and OSU is Utah.
- Florida defeated Utah on 9/3, 29-26 with a high of 168 yards passing, 106 yards rushing--both by Richardson.
- Oregon State lost to Utah on 10/1, 16-42, with a high of 177 yards passing and 44 yards rushing.

The Beavers have won three in a row, including an upset over #9 Oregon in the Civil War. Their only matchup against ranked opponents were losses to #7 USC and #12 Utah. Florida lost two in a row and has won against one ranked opponent, #7 Utah.

The Oregon State defense is also full of experienced upperclassmen. Note that former Gator Andrew Chatfield, one of Mullen's best defensive recruits, could not break the starting lineup at Oregon State. ILB Jack Colletto is the 2022 Paul Hornung Award winner.

With our questions (to say the least) at QB and a pronounced dearth at WR, our Offense appears pretty one-dimensional for this one.
While the running game HAS been the offense's strong suit, part of THAT was AR--and regardless, the Beaver D will likely come in DARING us to throw the ball.
Meanwhile, we are all well aware that OUR D ain't exactly been a bulwark this past season (or in recent ones, for that matter).
All told, I harbor little hope for even a competitive performance here--though it being our last game for some months of course I'll watch. We are all interested to see how Miller acquits himself, for example, should he play.
With lowered expectations come reduced chance of frustration or disappointment.
OR, as the "Realist's Bible" puts it:
"Blessed is he that expecteth nothing."
That may have to be our mantra for the time being.

The good news is that even Florida's second team is more talented than Oregon State's first team. As a matter of fact, the most talented OSU players are transfers--including former Gator Andrew Chatfield.

The starting offense for the Las Vegas Bowl is not much different from the starting offense vs Utah. Notable exceptions:
- Caleb Douglas worked his way up to the starting lineup due to injuries ahead of him
- Kaymryn Waites started at RT, but was moved to special teams and is now RG
- Jack Miller is now the starter for many reasons we do not need to get into
- Backups are still more talented than many of OSU's starters
