i'm not liking all these injuries. especially on O-line. atleast it'll build depth at those spots. going to be an interesting O&B game in (less than) two weeks

Since I'm stuck in my office down here in "The House of the Mouse" today and these lazy-assed sportswriters haven't posted any recaps, here's a link to Ray Fitzgerald's thread over at Gatorsports.com as he reports live from practice: http://forums.gatorsports.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3691038186/m/6641092468/r/7801043468#7801043468

(Oh BTW, screw ESPN for snubbing our Gators this year by not broadcasting the O&B live from The Swamp: http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2009/04/no-espn-love-for-florida-gators-spring-game.html )

Hernandez becoming go-to guy

bilde

It’s pretty obvious now that Florida’s search for the next Percy Harvin will carry over into the fall, and maybe beyond. Another spring search, however, is over.
The Gators have found their go-to guy on offense.
“On third and fourth down, you see who I’m looking for,” quarterback Tim Tebow said.
That would be No. 81 — junior tight end Aaron Hernandez.
When Tebow has needed a first down or a spark to get the offense going this spring, he’s turned to Hernandez time and time again. And Hernandez has responded by making play after play.
“He’s having a great spring,” new tight ends coach Brian White said. “He’s really improved fundamentally, and he’s really fun to coach. He has just a ton of personality, and I’ve really enjoyed coaching him. He’s a really smart football player. He’s an outstanding route runner and has excellent hands. And he’s done a nice job improving his blocking.”
Several recent practices have turned into personal Aaron Hernandez highlight shows.
In last Saturday’s scrimmage, he caught touchdown passes of 55 and 17 yards. In Monday’s practice, he caught more than a dozen passes and had a long touchdown reception after coming back on an underthrown ball, then cutting back up field for the score.

Spring practice report: Friday, April 10

Highlights
Sophomore Will Hill ran with the first-team defense in the absence of injured safety Major Wright, who sat out after being dinged up Wednesday. Hill made the most of the opportunity, making several plays and intercepting a pass from Tim Tebow late in practice. He definitely looks comfortable in the starter’s role. ... Tebow and No. 2 quarterback John Brantley both did a nice job leading the offense down the field during the two-minute drill at the end of practice. Both were pretty sharp throwing the ball for most of the day. ... Early in practice, starting cornerback Joe Haden blocked a field goal. He broke up several passes later in the practice and continues to be one of the defensive stars of the spring. ... During a one-on-one blocking drill, tight end Aaron Hernandez handled outside linebacker Ryan Stamper. ... Sophomore wide receiver Paul Wilson had one of his best practices since he’s been at UF . He caught several passes, including one for 18 yards and another for 22. ... The No. 1 secondary pretty much had the receivers blanketed during the seven-on-seven passing drill. ...Redshirt freshman outside linebacker Lerentee McCray had a tackle for loss. ... On back-to-back plays, Brantley completed a 26-yard pass to wide receiver Frankie Hammond and Tebow hooked up with Hernandez for a 35-yard gain. A few minutes later, Tebow threw a strike to Hernandez down the middle of the field for a 40-yard gain. On the next play, Tebow threw a 15-yard TD pass to Hammond. ... Defensive end William Green tipped a Brantley pass in the backfield after a strong rush from the outside. ...Tebow found walk-on wide receiver Cade Holliday behind the No. 2 secondary for a 50-yard pass play. ... Cornerback Janoris Jenkins, defensive end Duke Lemmens and middle linebacker Brendan Beal all broke up passes. ... Carl Moore caught a 28-yard pass from Tebow.
Lowlights
The quarterbacks are off-limits in all drills, but redshirt freshman defensive tackle Earl Okine stormed through the line and slung Brantley to the ground on the final play of the day. Brantley was momentarily shaken up, holding his right hand, but he appeared fine as he left the practice field. ... The offensive line is so depleted by injuries that walk-on William Steinmann ran with the No. 1 line at left guard throughout the practice. ... Brantley overthrew a wide-open Hammond behind the secondary. ...Holliday and wide receiver Justin Williams dropped passes. ... Hernandez dropped a touchdown pass after nearly making a one-handed catch. He dropped the ball when he tried to secure it with his other hand.
Young guy watch
Redshirt freshmen wide receiver T.J. Lawrence and Frankie Hammond Jr. each caught several passes. ... Sophomore fullback Steven Wilks looks like he’s making a strong push more than midway through the spring. After catching a touchdown pass in Wednesday scrimmage, Wilks did a nice job during a one-on-one blocking drill, keeping defender at bay.
Play of the day
In the two-minute drill near the end of practice, safety Will Hill drew a huge cheer from the crowd when he reached in and stole a pass from tight end Aaron Hernandez. The interception came against Tim Tebow.
Injury update
Senior tailback Emmanuel Moody missed practice after having a pin placed in his hand to replace a small bone that was fractured in Wednesday’s practice. Running backs coach Kenny Carter said Moody will return to practice Monday. ... Offensive tackle Matt Patchan (knee) practiced for the first time this spring. He looked good going against defensive tackle Jaye Howard in the two-minute drill. ... Several injured players dressed out but did not practice, including defensive tackle Brandon Antwine (knee), outside linebacker A.J. Jones (shoulder), center Maurkice Pouncey (shoulder), offensive guard James Wilson (foot), wide receiver Deonte Thompson (hamstring), defensive tackle Terron Sanders (calf), cornerback Jeremy Brown (back) and defensive end Justin Trattou (shoulder). ... Fullback T.J. Pridemore missed Friday’s practice. There were no details on his injury. ... Redshirt freshman wide receiver T.J. Lawrence appeared to slightly sprain an ankle as he was being tackled out of bounds in the two-minute drill.

Brantley breaks out

During the 2010 season, when John Brantley is throwing touchdown passes and producing 300-yard passing games, maybe everyone will look back on Saturday morning and say that’s when it all started.
The sophomore from Ocala had a breakout performance in Saturday’s scrimmage, completing passes all over the practice field to ignite a Florida offense that has been dormant for most of the spring.
“John Brantley had his best day as a Gator,” UF coach Urban Meyer said. “His management (was excellent). We all know he’s talented. He missed one early wide open and then he was on fire.
“Today, he looked like a Florida quarterback. I’m really impressed.”
Brantley and wide receivers Deonte Thompson and Carl Moore put on an aerial show. The way Brantley was firing away, making big completions and leading the offense, it looked like one of his highlight tapes from his All-American career at Trinity Catholic.

Moody expected to practice next week

Florida Gators running back Emmanuel Moody underwent surgery Friday on a fractured bone in his hand, but still might be able to play in next Saturday's Orange & Blue game.
Moody had several pins placed in his hand to stabilize the fracture and is expected to return to practice on Monday. He was hurt during practice Wednesday and did not practice Friday or Saturday.
Moody rushed for 417 yards and one touchdown on 58 carries last season. He missed three games with a left ankle sprain but still finished second on the team in rushing.
The 6-foot, 210-pound redshirt junior sat out the 2007 season after transferring to Florida from Southern California. He rushed for 459 yards (5.8 per carry) and two touchdowns in nine games for the Trojans in 2006.

John Brantley's continued improved play bodes well for for our offense. Looking forward to seeing him behind center more this season than behind Coach.

Even with track, Demps still focused on football

Sophomore RB Jeff Demps may have bailed on spring practice this year, but that doesn't mean he's not paying attention at all to his football obligations.
After one week of spring practice, UF coach Urban Meyer agreed to allow Demps to concentrate solely on track this spring. But Meyer said Demps is still participating in football-related activities, just not practicing. And he won't play in the spring game.
"We meet with him four days a week,'' Meyer said. "He lifts with our strength coach and he’s still doing change of direction drills. It took us about two months to get the straight-ahead (running) out of him (during his freshman year last season). Because football is not just straight ahead, it’s changing direction. His first month, he wasn’t very good and the last three months he was tremendous. So he comes in and does change of direction drills in the strength room, he does offensive meetings with coach Carter (Kenny, running backs coach) and then he runs track.''
Last June, Demps set a national record in the 100 meters with a 10.01 in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Olympic trials.
