Urban Meyer and Gator Expectations

Mr2Bits

Gator Fan
One thing I want to make clear is that Urban Meyer is still a GREAT coach - top 3 in the nation. What he has done so far in his first like 5 years with the Gators is incredible. He's earned the right to stay here as long as he wants.

I don't ever want to hear Gator fans calling for Urban's head if he doesn't win a Championship in the next 2-3 years. It is extremely hard to win championships.

As Gator fans, we expect to win them all but that's just not realistic. The worst thing we can do is start calling Meyer out if he has a few 10 win seasons. I don't want him to ever think that nothing is good enough for Gator fans, or we'll never be happy unless we have rings. If he starts to get that impression he might just bolt for another school like ND.

Let's respect and support Meyer so we can keep him here for a looong time.

Dave, I couldn't have said it better myself and I agree 100% with what you have said. Urban Meyer has put all his heart into bringing Gator football back from the mediocrity of the Zook years to a prominent force once again - still, Gator fans complain.

Instead of appreciating what these kids have accomplished, we see stuff like this:

"This is a trap game".
"Kiffin won a moral victory".
"Steve Spurrier had a better offense."
"Addazio sucks."
"We need a pro-style offense" - and so on.

I don't ever want to see Meyer leave because of the few imbecile fans amongst our fanbase who have unrealistic expectations or expect him to be a clone of SOS - he is who he is, he has his own style, and so far he has shown that he knows what it takes to build a successful program. (Hell, if I had the choice to choose between Meyer and SOS, I'd take Meyer in a heartbeat. If the Spurrier-worshippers don't like hearing that, tough.)

With all the other distractions during this season, Meyer and the kids handled themselves well but Dunlap's stupidity in getting that DUI was costly. Still, I'm not complaining about our getting a Sugar Bowl berth - after all, we still ranked in the top 5 after Saturday's games were over, which is nothing to be ashamed of.

Here's a write-up about Coach from the "Slantinel": http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/gators/os-urban-meyer-hospitalized-2-20091206,0,4056307.story
