November 1958.
Gas was 24 cents a gallon, average house price was $30,000, average income was $4,650, a Ford car was $1,967-$3,929, milk was $1.01, bread 19 cents and a postage stamp was four cents.
Yep, 50 years ago, the Silver Anniversary of the first football game between Florida and Florida State University.
And Florida Field (now Ben Hill Griffin Stadium) had 43,000 fans packed in.
worth the read ......MORE

It's definitely not an old rivalry, and few outside of Florida care for this game. Out here in Texas, no one is paying attention to this game but to watch Tebow and "that little guy Demps".

For us in the state of Florida, we know the importance of this rivalry. This is bigger than Florida-Miami or Florida State-Miami, but nowhere near as well known as Alabama-Auburn, Texas-Texas A&M, or Michigan-Ohio.

This year, it takes on a little more significance because: (1) this is a make-or-break game for our Gators because of BCS implications, (2) it's the 50th anniversary of the rivalry, and (3) we can win the Governor's Cup as Florida State Champions with a win this afternoon.

Well back in the day (1990's) It was a big deal nationally (I think).

True to some degree. I realize living out here away from SEC fans just how fans in general tend to stick to their own locale or conference and ignore the other ones until the end of the season. I travel a lot in my job, and people expect me to know about the big rivalries in that area as if EVERYONE knows about them. When I travel to Ohio, people automatically assume that everyone in America cares about Michigan-Ohio State, and in the LA-area people assume that everyone in America cares about USC versus whatever.

In reality, UF-FSU or the SEC in general doesn't matter to anyone west of the Mississippi until the end of the season if teams are ranked in the top 10. The rest of the country is slow to warm up to the idea that the SEC is just as strong or stronger than the Big 10, Big 12, or Pac 10. Also think about marketing. When I travel to California, I see USC, Michigan, Penn State, Miami and Ohio State gear everywhere. Rarely do I see Florida or Florida State gear outside of the Florida-Georgia-Carolina area.
