Gator recruiting 2007: Did Brantley choose UF because of his girlfriend?

'07 FL QB John Brantley (Florida Verbal) - BuckeyePlanet Ohio State Forums

I was digging through old files on my computer and ran across this gem. It is a Buckeye forum discussing recruits, including JB (son and nephew of a Gator, coached by Gators) and Cam Newton ("some stud out of Atlanta).

It's funny to read many of the foretelling comments on JB. His favorite pass route in high school? The one that Deonte always misses? His thoughts on size and speed? He knew he was small and slow. His preferred college? Texas. His girlfriend's preferred college? Florida. Everyone's thoughts on JB as a spread-option QB? Not very positive. There is a lot of foreshadowing of today's sentiments in this 2006 forum thread. Interesting read.

Sad, 'cause it's clear he's in the wrong place--and this head-up-its-collective-butt coaching braintrust is going to keep sending him and the little backs into the line, not changing a damn thing in their blindly stubborn and self-delusional efforts to prove "WE ARE RIGHT".
(Meanwhile, if JB launches just one long one this weekend, the whole Gator-side of the stadium should stand up and applaud--whether he completes it or not!)

Well, his dear uncle is being enshrined into the WLOCP Hall of Fame. Maybe that will motivate him to show off, complete or not.

JB could be fine if we ran routes deeper then 10-12 yds and actually have some guys go deep for 30+ yds

and then coaches say our guys cant learn the routes gtfoh its the not WR's your routes just suck and are too short to get a DB off you

Why throw deep if you aren't going to bench Deonte Thompson?
to get big plays and score, you see every other team every game lol and its not like we dont have plenty other WRs on the roster besides DT

JB has 6 passing TD's thats freakin terrible

the freshmen UGA QB has twice that

all we do is get small chunks like a HS team with a shit QB

In the 1980s we ran a dink-and-dunk passing offense and it worked as long as we had great running backs. This offense could get away with it if we used some of the other RBs that are sitting on the bench, or shuffled players around, or benched the ones that were dropping passes. However, none of this fits the Urban Meyer or Dazzler Addazio plan. What baffles me is that we know this offense has been modified before for Chris Leak, and we saw some I-formations earlier in the season. Why did we stop adapting? Hence, we look worse than a high school team.

During that time they had three backs who came first-rounders before Emmitt Smith and one receiver who also became a first rounder.

If, if, if, if, if...there are SO MANY things this offense could do, has the tools in talent, speed and depth (AND, once upon the time, a visionary offensive mind at Head Coach) to TAKE ITS PICK, that by now frustration has begun to turn to cynical hopelessness.
It really is unfathomable--you'll drive yourself nuts trying to figure out "Why? WHY?!!".
I resent this coaching staff for letting things get to this, offense (for all the reasons implied above) AND defense; after months of talking they brought this team into the season unprepared, and it has appeared to be the same for every game since (hence our 1st qtr. futility)...I place the ultimate responsibility, and yes, BLAME, at the feet of Urban Meyer himself.
