Coach Jon Sumrall will be bringing another Gator Great to the coaching staff—Phil Trautwein.

Player Summary

Phil Trautwein (born April 16, 1986) was a standout offensive tackle at the University of Florida (2004–2008). He started 29 games, earned first-team All-SEC (2008), third-team All-American honors, and was a team captain in 2007–08. He started every game for Florida’s 2008 BCS National Championship team and also contributed to the 2006 title. Undrafted in 2009, he played four NFL games with the St. Louis Rams and spent time with the Browns, Saints, and Chargers before retiring in 2012.

Coaching Summary

Trautwein began coaching as a graduate assistant under his former offensive line coach, Steve Addazio, at Boston College (2013–15), then coached tight ends/special teams at Davidson (2016–17). He returned to Boston College as offensive line coach (2018–19), earning all five starters All-ACC honors in 2019. After Addazio was fired in 2019, Trautwein was picked up by Penn State in 2020, he spent six seasons (2020–2025) as offensive line coach, producing seven NFL Draft picks (including first-rounders Olu Fashanu and Chris Lindstrom/Zion Johnson from BC), multiple All-Americans, and 39 all-conference selections across BC and Penn State. After James Franklin was fired in 2025, Trautwein was picked up as offensive line coach at Florida under head coach Jon Sumrall, returning to his alma mater.

Accolades
During his tenure as an offensive line coach at Boston College (2018–2019) and Penn State (2020–2025), Phil Trautwein mentored several players who earned All-American recognition from NCAA-recognized outlets (e.g., AP, AFCA, Walter Camp). Another STRONG HIRE for the new staff here at UF, it would appear.
Things really shaping up notably well for us:
I’m already looking forward with a certain excitement and optimism to the first few games.
Meanwhile, as we kind of “snap out it”, awaken and begin to recover from our heavy “Kiffen-crush”, one effect of our (necessarily and inevitably) having moved on from all of that is to more clearly recognize the accumulating POSITIVES that continue to accrue—beginning of course with first (AND second) impressions of our new Coach, but now progressively accelerating with successive hirings.
A few more important ones to come, certainly—clearly, “Strength & Conditioning” deserves our close attention.
Continued retention of current commits is huge; so far, so good there. We will need to see parallel development in both portal additions, AND in building the 2027 class, in order to keep this seeming forward momentum going—and early signs are that these hires and more will only add to that.
