Some observations following Florida’s 106-71 win over LSU:
— Credit Florida freshman guard Eric Hester for taking advantage of an opportunity. With second-leading scorer Canyon Barry sidelined, Hester made an impact on both ends of the floor. Besides going 5 for 5 from the floor with a career-high 16 points, Hester had 4 assists, 2 steals and 3 rebounds. Watching pregame warm ups, Hester made about six or seven 3-pointers in a row, and it extended into the game. Certainly, Hester has earned the right to stay in the playing rotation for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma.
— Certainly, Florida has proven to be a streaky 3-point shooting team in two seasons under Mike White. But to call Florida inconsistent because it made no 3-pointers the week before against South Carolina and a school-record 19 3s against LSU doesn’t tell the full scope of the story. South Carolina is one of the best teams in the country in defending the 3-point line, with long athletes that close out against shooters. LSU, meanwhile, made little effort to defend the 3-point line against the Gators on Wednesday night. Somewhere, there’s a middle ground and Florida will need to be average to above average from the perimeter to pick up another road win at Oklahoma.
— Lost in Florida’s offensive onslaught was the fact that it out rebounded an opponent for the second straight game. Florida finished with a 39-31 rebounding edge, and for the third straight game, junior forward Devin Robinson was engaged on the glass with 8 rebounds. Florida was active on the offensive boards as well, scoring 12 points off 10 offensive rebounds.
