Bad news guys

Maybe Burton will replace Hill. The kid can learn complete schemes overnight. His football IQ is off the chart and he's an incredible athlete. I'm hoping he develops into the next Eraser.

It's always "feast or famine" out there at S, so I don't like to get too down on these young speedsters who play it, but Hill repeatedly missed the coverage on the other team's "hot" WR at crucial points the last few games this past season, releasing him to make a big play--often on "3rd and forever" late in games! That gets old.
Putting Burton out there is an interesting thought. I don't doubt he has the smarts to learn it, the skills to manage it, or the "stones" to face it--but do you put a guy who's never played the position on the spot that way? More to the point, will Chomp and Co. do it?

It's a new set of coaches. We have to assume that he will have to earn his position like everyone else, right? If he beats out the other guys, maybe he will be like Joe Haden in his ability to switch from QB to DB. Besides, Burton has played defense in high school and he is one guy we assume will have the least problems learning. He also has a hard work ethic.

Big difference between practice and gametime, though--maybe even more so at S. You want to give the guy every chance to succeed...I guess that's one way where our "pre-season" approach to scheduling pays off: the player gets a taste of being out there "alone on an island" against (mostly) real competition; the staff figures "if he can't handle THAT, well...". I know the theory is that our guys go up against some of the best in college football EVERY DAY--in practice! But they get familiar with each other, their styles and habits on the one hand, and the plays and schemes they are running on THEIR side of the ball.
I guess I like Burton so much as a "can do"-guy as WELL as a unique jack-of-all-trades athlete, I want to see him find his ideal spot, some role where he can continue to shine the way we've already seen multiple glimpses of. When you're so good at so many things, sometimes you can get lost in the crowd of "specialists", especially when a new "management team" comes in. Gonna have to trust that our new Head Coach is as sharp and thorough as my impression of him would seem to indicate.

Well, he played free safety in high school. The free safety needs to watch the play unfold and zoom in or back out as necessary. With his extensive knowledge of QB, RB, WR, and TE, maybe that will translate to good game sense in sniffing out offenses and anticipating the plays. True, he did struggle with the zone-read as a QB, but he figured out the soft spots to make nice catches. As a strong safety, he could use his knowledge of the TE position and possibly some insight from QB to close in on those soft spots. As a free safety, he certainly is fast enough to be the last line of defense...more so than a certain player whose name rhymes with Hill Will.

Very good point.

John Lynch was recruited by Stanford to play QB. He ended up switching to Safety. We all know how that turned out.

Good one. I will counter with this gem, just to be funny: Will Hill played QB, WR, FS, and RB in high school. (The difference is that Hill was not recruited for anything other safety, and John Lynch probably had a better work ethic.)

I think a move to the defense and safety would be wise not only due to his football smarts but also we need a strong leader on this side of the football.

Whomever gets the nod just needs to watch a few game films of how Reggie Neslon played center field and we will be good to go. The 'Eraser" was the best, and one of my favorite Gators of all time.

That would probably work out really well. I think they should try that.

Word is Burton himself made the call on this switch. He knows what he can do. This might turn out to be one of those fortuitous meetings of talent, need and circumstance that produces just the right outcome.

I think it's a safe bet that Black will be drafted ahead of Hill.

You never can tell nowadays. The early scouting analysis is that Black is too short for the first round, and possibly too slow. Will Hill is faster and taller and has those measurables for the scouts. I and much of the Gator Nation want Black to be drafted ahead of Hill, but the scouts don't care about the Gator Nation opinion. Black will have to "pull a Tebow" and work harder than the rest to get where he wants to go.

If Black does drop into the lower rounds he will make someone a real "diamond in the rough" pick. Players like him go later in the draft and then turn into superstuds. No matter the order Ahmad will turn into a great NFL safety. So much of the position is about awareness. Knowing where to be and when to be there. He will be fine.
