Pete Carroll to Seattle Seahawks

With his kingdom quickly crumbling all around him, the King of L.A. is leaving A Better L.A. to start A Better Seattle. Maybe.

No, not maybe he isn't leaving. That's a done deal. But maybe he won't make Seattle that much better.....

What do you guys think this means for college football and the Gators??

I think it means better recruiting for everybody at least for the time being... and definitely a lock down on CB Josh Shaw.

And who do you think USC will go after to replace Carroll?

From what I heard on ESPN News, Oregon State's Mike Riley is one of the front-runners to replace Carroll if he goes.

The question should be: Can Carroll do better in the pros the third time around? Very few coaches who were successful at the college level enjoy the same level of success in the NFL; two who were lucky were Dick Vermeil and Jimmy Johnson. Since Nick Saban spent a short time in Miami, it's hard to say how he would have done in the long run. Steve Spurrier and Butch Davis struggled in the pros and eventually came back to the college ranks where they've found a niche - and it seems that Dave Wannstedt is better suited for the NCAA based on how well he's been doing with Pitt (and don't be surprised to see them make a BCS bowl in the near future).

There are some Gator fans who think Urban Meyer will eventually wind up in the NFL, but I don't think so - he's made it clear many times that he has no interest in going to the pros, and I don't think he'd be comfortable in that culture. His style and philosophy are better suited to working with kids in college than grown men in the NFL.

Maybe three's a charm, and Carroll may do better given another chance.

As far as USC, they'll likely go into a slight decline; based on the fact that they didn't make a BCS bowl this year it may have already started.

I do agree with you that this news does have a bearing on recruiting, and it may work to UF's advantage (or at least I can hope so).

I think is a big mistake for all involved Carroll, Seahawks because they wanted a tougher team and I don't think Carroll is the guy to bring toughness. However it's good because the top recruits go elsewhere including Florida :)

Carroll had two choices--take another HC job in college or go to the NFL. USC has other issues that would make 2010+ a rough era. Even if he flops, he can say he tried again and he can return to college football without losing anything.

I find it interesting that Alabama is not benefitting as well as Florida off the Pete Carroll departure. We must have recruited well there. UM spent a good amount of time recruiting there in USC territory, so I hope he relaxes knowing his hard work paid off.

Knowing the NCAA is investigating USC over the Reggie Bush scandal and other things, the timing couldn't have been better for Carroll to bail on Troy one step ahead of them - but according to ESPN News, he could still be deposed as part of the ongoing investigation even if he does leave for the NFL.

The LA Times is speculating on who could replace Carroll; they might as well take Sarkisian and Harbaugh off their list as they have no interest in leaving their present jobs: http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/usc/la-sp-carroll10-2010jan10,0,4735983.story

Even if Carroll is deposed as part of the investigation, he has a better chance of keeping a Seattle Seahawk job than a USC Trojan job. Even if found innocent at USC, his 2010-2014 teams could be hurt by sanctions, directly or indirectly. Smart move to bail now.

Seattle has a long road...they are weak on the offensie line, their running game is inadequate, Hasselback is nearing the end and Wallace is an ineffiecient back-up, their defense has a lot of holes and their deep coverage gets burnt every week. Two first round draft picks won't help much. Seattle needs to make some great FA deals.
