Week 6/ 3: #4 Florida Gators 38, Texas A&M Aggies 41 10/10

The #4 Gators return to Kyle Field, the namesake of QB Kyle Trask, to take on the #21 Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field at noon on October 10th. The Gators are favored by 6.5 and the over/under is 57.5 points.

Under Jimbo Fisher, the Aggies are 14-4 when scoring first and 13-0 when leading at the end of the first quarter. Look for the Aggies to strike first and strike hard against the relatively soft Gator defense.

The Gators have been playing conservative and have been rotating all of the players in anticipation of injuries and COVID outbreak that have both spared the Gators to this point. Even when playing conservative, they are playing efficiently. In their game against Ole Miss the Gators led the conference in points per play at 0.72, with Mississippi State and Alabama coming in behind at 0.58 and 0.56. In their game against South Carolina the Gators shut down their offense in the second half yet they were #2 in points per play at 0.72 to Alabama's 0.95.

Kyle Trask likes to start off games strong as well, going 12/14 for 172 yards (12.3 YPA) 3 TD in the 1st quarter. The Aggie defense struggled to slow down the similarly equipped Alabama offense and surrendered 3 and 7 yard scoring drives of 80 and 66 yards in a grand total of 5:32 of clock. Against South Carolina, the Gator offense scored on drives of 75 and 69 yards in a total of 7:50 of clock after the Gamecocks made the initial score. The Gator offense turned it up a notch in the 3rd quarter by scoring on drives of 37 and 58 yards in a total of 2:58 of clock, showing that this Gator offense can operate at multiple speeds.

Kellen Mond has not been able to string together back-to-back scoring drives. In their victory against Vanderbilt it was the defense that kept them in the game by forcing a safety in the 2nd quarter. It took a last-minute field goal by the Aggies to officially seal the victory against the mighty Commodores. Mond has shown that he can throw the ball all over the yard, so he will need to be on point against the Gators and take advantage of DBU's weakness in the middle of the field.

With only two data points to compare it is hard to tell where these teams are in their development cycle. Texas A&M will be playing against a Florida team that on paper looks a lot like its last opponent, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Statistically the Gators and the Tide are performing at a similar level on offense, with the better defense going to Alabama. If the Gator offense keeps applying pressure on the Aggie defense, expect this game to be a 42-35 victory for the Orange and Blue.

You KNOW how I’M sweating this one out...I sure am hoping you are wrong about it being THAT much of a “nail biter”—but truth is, if we CAN pull this one out it will probably be in just that fashion: By a single big score late in a shoot out!
And I’ll TAKE it, believe me!
I’m hoping we might finally begin to get some help from that 5-star transfer out of Miami (“Lindgard”?)...Mullens was asked about him in his latest presser, and said he got “banged up” in the short “camp” they had before starting play, and of course that he was behind the other RBs to START with, finally getting his eligibility approved by the NCAA so late.
By the way, @Escambia94, I wonder what precipitated the sudden”jump” (for us here at GE, relatively speaking) in new members this midweek. Not that I’m complaining...it COULD POTENTIALLY make game days more fun here, more “wide open”. Our continued success with this big time Pedal-to-the-metal, “score at will” offense could only help...
Here’s hoping!

On the eve before ANOTHER “EARLY START” kick off for us—on the road for a THIRD ESPN-televised game in a row, I am well into a full WEEK-PLUS of worrying about this one (truthfully, quite a bit longer than that).
If anything, my trepidation has only grown—all the more reason I appreciate E- having routinely fallen into the habit of setting up a “Gameday”-site here in which he (ALSO “routinely”) previews the tesms and game in general...I would only have continued my involuntarily compulsive “voice of doom” when it comes to this one. I just keep expecting “the mask to be ripped away”, “the bell to toll at midnight”—choose your dark forebodings!
It looks like we are currently a “beat ‘em in a shoot out” kind of team: Without a defense it just feels as if we are a coupla bad-breaks-early from having it all slip through our fingers.
GEEZ I wanna be wrong; I’ll happily, JOYFULLY REVEL in my seeming lack of faith, castigate my own failure in judgment and trust if we can just hold our own here after all.
It would help a whole lot if we at least found a reliable ground game to more fully control the pace of the game. The combination of a still-questionable defense and all-air offense (no matter HOW flashy thus far) leaves us potentially exposed and exploitable against a Jimbo-coached, athletically talented TAMU team looking for some high-profile, nationally-televised redemption.
Play our first complete game and WIN this thing and I will completely reevaluate my expectations and overall approach to the REST of the schedule—but ever since I saw the revised schedule I have seen this game as the beginning of our having to face the true ‘current realities’...and the Arkansas game against another ‘former Gator QB’ as sort of its ‘bookend’, ‘rub-our-faces-in-it” ‘OTHER fatal loss’ in a promising season about to go off track...
I’m sorry: This is exactly why I will butt out here; I really DO hope like HELL I am wrong. Again: If so, I will be the first to concede it—and certainly will take no satisfaction at ALL in turning out to be right. On the contrary: It is the very dread of the disappointment I fear we’ll all have to absorb that has had me feeling this way for WEEKS.
Well, here we are.
Never the less:
“WE WON’T BACK DOWN!”
Go GATORS!

I'm sure we want this game to be a Gator Victory because of one Jimbo Fisher. They only beat him once in his eight years in FSU. It was the worst of times for the Gators (other than the 2012 season).

Kickoff less than an hour away...
and we are here—as witnesses, at LEAST.
Who are we now? Where are we headed, and how quickly? With so much so twisted in this world, am I crazy to care so MUCH??!
I just don’t know.
Perhaps we’ll ALL have better perspective in a few hours.

I want this game not because of Dumbo Fisher, but due to the fact I live in Texas surrounded by Aggies.

Same old shit: We had a chance to get off the field—blew it on 3rd and long, then immediately gave up the big pass!

No excuses on that one. Most sports pundits were predicting before the season and before the aTm-Bama game that the Aggies would be Florida’s only loss. Still early to say, but aTm scored faster than the Gators. Defense is horrible.

Aggie offense scores rather quickly. All tied up. View attachment 526
Yeah. Just what I was afraid of:
We STILL can’t get off the field...
As I’ve said elsewhere, that just won’t DO this week: If we think a solitary stop at the end is the way to beat THESE guys, well, you can FORGET the larger dreams!

Amazing how FAR the D has fallen.
Yes, the offense appears to have come JUST as far the other way—but THIS porous a defense is a real liability: We will NOT be even CLOSE to the elite level we aspire to with THIS defense.
I’ve heard all the rationalizations, even agree with a number of them—but it remains difficult to understand how, with the undeniable talent still on that side of the ball, how mediocre we are playing. Good as Grantham’s much-ballyhooed defensive schemes have shown in the last coupla years, they haven’t shown much so far THIS season.
For the third time in three games, WE JUST CANNOT GET OFF THE FIELD and get the ball back to our great offense. And if we wanna win by OUTSCORING these SEC opponents, we DAMN WELL BETTER!

Gators scored first and are leading at the end of the first. Gator offense will be their defense today.

This was the game that experts predicted as a loss for Florida, and we have seen nothing to convince us otherwise.
