No—NOT “too soon”; not these days. And so far, he is DEFINITELY “one of those guys”, possibly even “the early FRONT-runner”.Just wondering
Yeah, well, I give about as much credence to THAT as I do “media political polls” or “politicians promises at election time”...https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/...or-lawrence-no-longer-heisman-trophy-favorite
According to this, he's sixth.
...and, as I have noted all along, the “media experts” (who in THIS case are, if not “the exact same people“, ARE from the same “pool”) has more or less annointed him from the START—he hasn’t done anything to “LOSE it”, so ya gotta think he is, at the very least, “still on track”!It is still early, but historically when the Heisman goes to a QB that player must be in the top 5 in terms of passing efficiency, must be on a top-20 team, and must be in a Power 5 conference. Other variables include being on popular teams and good performances in key games. I would go ahead and scratch off Grayson McCall from this list, since it will take a lot of losses and bad performances from others to put a Sun Belt QB in the Heisman watch. Trask is the only one in the adjusted top 5 with a loss, and there is no guarantee that Mac Jones, Justin Fields, or Graham Mertz will get a loss. Maybe if Trask goes nuts on Georgia (29/30 for 400 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT) and performs similarly throughout the season then I can see a comeback. For now, I do not see a path for Trask to win the Heisman. If he increases his rating a bit he could be in the running for Davey O'Brien or something like that.
Mac Jones has the following teams to face and possibly trip him up as the front-runner:
- Graham Mertz, Wisconsin, 273.0, 95.1 QBR, 5 TD, 0 IN, 1-0 B10
- Justin Fields, Ohio State, 214.0, 97.2 QBR, 6 TD, 0 INT, 1-0 B10
- Mac Jones, Alabama, 210.3, 95.5 QBR, 16 TD, 2 INT, 6-0 SEC
- Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina, 201.8, 89.0 QBR, 15 TD, 1 INT, 6-0 SUN
- Zach Wilson, BYU, 198.7, 86.3 QBR, 19 TD, 2 INT, 7-0 IND
- Kyle Trask, Florida, 189.2, 90.4 QBR, 18 TD, 2 INT, 3-1 SEC
Justin Fields has a much easier path to overtake Mac Jones should Alabama trip up against Auburn:
- @ LSU
- vs UK
- vs #24 AUB
- @ ARK
Graham Mertz is atop the rankings with only one game under his belt, with a schedule that looks similar to Justin Fields' (since they are in the same conference), with the addition of much easier teams such as Minnesota, Northwestern, and Purdue.
- vs Rutgers
- @ MD
- vs #14 IU
- @ ILL
- @ MSU
- vs #23 MICH
My prediction for the Heisman is Justin Fields.
I did not expect the UGA defense to let Trask pick them apart so easily. The UGA defense injuries were not at CB, where they were beat with great precision from Trask and great athleticism from the receivers, tight ends, and running backs. Kudos to Kyle Trask for putting his name back in the hat for Heisman consideration. He went 30/43 for 474 yards and 4 TDs. He's got to be the front runner for sure. Also, probably helped his draft stock.

Trask HAS (DESERVEDLY) elbowed his way BACK into the Heismann discussion, but he is NOT yet “at the top”, isn’t in the position of “favorite” by any means; most of the “talking heads” on ESPN’s various College Football shows still have their “longtime favorite” they focus on, and still appear SURPRISED at not only TRASK’S continued skill and efficiency, but the talent around him on the Gator offense:I did not expect the UGA defense to let Trask pick them apart so easily.
