Capital One Orange Bowl
#24 Virginia Cavaliers (9-4) vs #9 Florida Gators (10-2)
Monday December 30, 2019, 8:00 PM (EST)
Hard Rock Stadium Miami Gardens, FL
FLA -13.5 Total 53.5
ESPN

Overview
The ACC's Coastal Division champion Virginia Cavaliers host the mighty Gators in the 84th edition of the Orange Bowl. Hard Rock Stadium at Miami Gardens, Florida hosts these two teams of orange and blue by virtue of Virginia being the top-rated, non-CFP, ACC team, and by Florida being the best at-large pick from SEC, B1G, or Notre Dame. The Gators are 2-1 in Hard Rock Stadium with a 2002 rout of Maryland 56-23, a 24-14 BCS championship victory over Oklahoma in 2009, and a 16-21 road loss to Miami in 2013. Florida is 1-0 all-time against Virginia by virtue of a 55-10 blowout in 1959. This is Virginia's first appearance in the Orange Bowl, but this is their 7th appearance in Miami Gardens, where they are 1-5 to this point with their last victory being in 2011 against the University of Miami.

Prediction
The Gators are expected to win this one handily against the overconfident Cavaliers. The Gators will exploit the weak Cavalier pass defense, even with some of the senior receivers (#12 WR-X SR/TR Van Jefferson, #89 WR-Y SR Tyrie Cleveland, #10 WR-Z RSR Josh Hammond, and #16 WR-Z SR Freddie Swain) possibly sitting out for the NFL Draft. Expect to see more from Copeland, Grimes, Wells, and Toney. The Gators might take these 15 additional practices to get the run game going with younger running backs such as #20 RB SO Malik Davis, #27 RB SO Dameon Pierce, or even #24 RB FR Iverson Clement. Virginia's strength on offense is their passing, which plays into Florida's strength on defense, even without #1 LCB JR CJ Henderson sitting out for the NFL Draft. Virginia's QB has more rushing yards than Florida's running backs combined, so the Gators will need to contain UVA QB Bryce Perkins. Expect the Gators to reach 10 wins in back to back years under Dan Mullen by a score of 42-17.

I believe it should be an easy victory for the Gators even with players sitting out. It sucks to see but it is what it is.

I just realized that the Virginia QB is actually their leading rusher, so I added his rushing statistics. UVA QB Bryce Perkins has more rushing yards (745) than his own featured running back, Wayne Taulapapa (459) or Florida's leading RB, Lamical Perine (539). For reference, Florida's second leading RB, Dameon Pierce, only has 271 yards. QB Emory Jones is third with 224 yards. If Perine does not play in the Orange Bowl, the Virginia QB will step onto the field having more rushing yards than all of Florida's active running backs COMBINED (Pierce, Davis, Clement, with Emory Jones thrown in for good measure).

REALLY like the idea of us using the extra advance prep-time to “prepare a running game from among our young recruits” and signees...Idea that THEY come in “over-confident” is sorta puzzling; is that really the case
—AND where’d they GET this “confidence”? In a speed-game they are ALREADY steps behind before the opening KICK! (Bringing a second “11-win season in a row”—and really setting us up to challenge the elite come 2020!
In fact, as I watch these Tigers from LSU pass SILLY on the Sooners in the Peach Bowl this evening, it strikes me that, simply judging by OUR relative performances against superior SEC offenses AND defenses in the course of 2019, we have already surpassed that “next-level-standard” to a great extent, and are now moving INTO that “leaving all but the VERY best” behind! Finally, it appears we are within striking distance of that rarified, “runnin’ with THE BEST”-territory. Certainly, for example, it looks as if we’re ready to leave teams like the Okla Sooners and THEIR like behind. We’ve shown we can already run with the best in the SEC and keep up (more than these SOONERS can say!)...a few more players in the right places and a coaching staff furnishing them the right game plan, stay relatively healthy and...well, WE ARE CLOSE, GATORS!!!

This one could “turn-the-corner” in EITHER direction.
First, we can begin to build and identify our “new identity” on offense under Mullens.
Second, we could let an opportunity to do just that slip away while “future careers” are established by and AMONG Gator seniors who have already “moved on” in their heads and hearts (we’ve seen it before—all too often), with arguably little in the a way of coherent talent and/or (so far at least) pattern of play thus far shaping up on the field in front of us. I’m REALLY hoping to see that begin to shape up here, of course. A continued emergence of Emory Jones AND Kyle Trask, rather than simply stalling Jones’ growth while Trask at least continues HIS rise with new personnel at hand, is key for next season and beyond—and our continued strong growth on offense...In other words, we cannot just HOPE for the latter. Asthings appear strongly shaping up,
we are COUNTING ON IT!
One way or another, a classic stretch of creative and imaginative Mullens-style coaching and “QB-whispering” is in the offing on offense!
I HOPE to begin to see strong glimpses of that future TONIGHT!

More of same with our continued pathetic 2019 running game.
Is it ALL O-line problems?
There’s a Petrine run.
But we NEED a dynamic RB or three, clearly.
All in all, Virginia approaching this exactly how you beat Florida—and mainly making it work JUST well enough to pull it off over the course of a well-played game.
There’s Jones doing his “Y’all know what I’m gonna do—gonna do it ANYWAY”-routine. I am gonna really enjoy having him RUNNING this offense some day... If you ever have been watching when he was given the situational opportunity, you’d ALSO know he can throw bullets like a sniper, too. We just cannot LOSE this kid. DAMN!—JUST OFF FINGERTIPS in endzone!

Don’t look now, but these Cavaliers are primed to win this one:
Both their play AND THEIR STEADINESS has them IN this one still. Even after that Gator TD on 3rd-and-long. 14-7 us, late 1st qtr.

End of One.
Don’t kid yrslf: This is basically an evenly-played game against a squad we SHOULD be destroying; Our talent-OVER-balance here SHOULD HAVE US running FREE, but no go.
It isn’t that we are playing badly; but just NOT quite matching up at key moments.
Like right there in the backfield (and pressured throw by QB) then GREAT TD catch back of endzone.)
So: There you have it. Tied up 14-14 to start the 2nd quarter on strong Cavalier play...We don’t look bad—just that THEY LOOK BETTER THAN THEY HAVE ALL YEAR (even last few weeks to GET here). Time to assert ourselves if we don’t wanna have to fight hard to stay WITH them, damnit!
(And unless rules save us here, gonna lose a fumble ruling now too!)

This is hardly the “relaxing celebration to a generally decent Season 2 of the DAN MULLEN ERA” we all had in mind for the night...OK, rule saved us. And Trask rubs it 9 yds for THIRD PLAY IN A ROW!
Geez! It’s that last TD Pass’n’catch for a TD that haunts me STILL! We ARE driving again, though.

Drive breaking down here though.
Big play here inside 10 TD line. Damn!
This game is a warning: Either we take a couple of steps FORWARD on offense, or we are in danger of DE-evolving back to those mostly-defensive teams the last coupla Coaches have fielded.
Coach Dan wouldn’t do that ON PURPOSE—but if we aren’t careful, don’t consciously upgrade elsewhere on offense between here and late-August, that is exactly where we could find ourselves, nonetheless.
Look: I will take NOTHING away from Kyle Trask and the job he has done, continues to do, but a big chunk of what we are missing here COUKD be IMMEDIATELY reversed with Emory Jones rounding into form in an offense he and our Coach design for him. I know, I know—I been wearing that one out since mid-season...but the fact STILL remains: this “incremental improvement” continues to be LESS satisfyingly acceptable on offense, given our completion and relative position with respect to the handful of teams we profess to be “competing with for dominance in the SEC”! In THAT WIDER, “big PICTURE” view, it just doesn’t measure up.

...and throws like that on 4th and 8 amount to Kyle’s best answer, counterpoint to my own concerns, I admit it.
By all accounts, Emory, even WITH alll his raw physical skills at QB, isn’t quite “THERE” yet—but he WILL be, and I just hope we’ll be the team that benefits for the patience and coaching skills being invested NOW!
For now, let’s just go get another TD and get into the locker room. Oops there it IS!

All in all, we been everything “as advertised”, especially on offense here; But it has been Virginia that has seemed to have grown a great deal as a physical offense over the weeks, generally a balanced team all around as they improve on D as well. We are the more talented team—but this is a Virgina team “on the come”!

For some reason I have been having problems getting this site to load, so I have not been active.

The Gators look okay today, but not great.

Well, Mullens’ offensive scheme, already kinda “backyard pick-up” in the FIRST half, has so far failed to adjust at ALL here starting the the 3rd qtr.
Either there’s a “Plan B” readily in the wings already here—or we are bout to get ourselves beaten here in a sinking 2nd half!

That about (somewhat frustratingly) sums this one up so far.
