Man, you know things are bad when two players because of that loss.
Sucks to be Tennessee.
You know, while I normally have little in the way of sympathy or even interest in Tennessee save the usual scouting reports and general outlook the week we play them vis a vis what it'll take to wreck their world, can't say I think a whole lot of players who bail on the program they chose soon as things go bad. I mean, I suppose there is a limit to "how wrong" a young man can limit to having been before he must draw a line, move on--but even then, it just seems that this is symptomatic of how far the whole process (the cameras on NSD, the hats arranged in front of them, the fake outs etc etc ad infinitum) has sunk into hucksterism and egotistical irrelevance--and now the easy-swinging, well-oiled gates opening to give them all the chance to UNdo a big choice too easily jumped to in the first place--to do anything but cast a pessimistic eye on the character of the typical young "star athletes" running hither and yon in thoughtless, MINDLESS pursuit of money, fame and media attention. When did "getting better and better at The Game" take such a distant back seat to all the rest? Let alone becoming a leader, at the very least an important part of a good TEAM?
(Yeah, I know a lot of money is being made on their backs and off their sweat, and they deserve some easing of the chains that bind them--not to mention a "piece of the ACTION"--but all that is a matter for separate discussion and debate...this is pure "principle" I address here now.)
Meanwhile, like everyone else, I'm sure our coaches are (like you and me) wondering if these are players WE should go after, if this is another chance at improving OUR squad--with little regard for whether we WANT 'em, more self-centered prima donnas, if they might just have some onfield skills and talent. It strikes ME we'd do well to THINK about it first.
Mullen claims to follow a different blueprint--and THAT hasn't made him OR us immune to "misses", misjudgments and/or outright whiffs on our part thus far.
Look, all I'm saying is that we need to be very careful in how we navigate these strange new waters. There are warnings and lessons GALORE in ALL of this. I think our Head Coach's claimed independent approach to rating, choosing his players and building a team will serve us well, in the long run--if we let him stick to it. It may worry us for now:
"Where are the FIVE Star players? Why are Bama, UGA, Clemson et al grabbing them all?"
Given the very nature of this social-site-fed media circus that surrounds us, even drowns all thought and reason, only WINNING comes through, breaks into the decision-making process above the din of hype. We have to keep building and WINNING with "what we get"--and THAT takes COACHING. But if we can manage it, if our COACH can manage to keep it going, getting us closer and keeping us IN the conversation now that we are finally reentering it once more, the rest, INCLUDING the very BEST players will come, eventually: They'll WANT to be a part of "something special", something that "feels right", part of a TEAM, "in it together" for its OWN sake. Do not underestimate the POWER of such things to young men, young athletes working hard at achieving a certain PERFECTION.
I know that I am counting here upon an IDEAL, a kind of "shared vision" that only a GROUP of people can create together in a kind of imagination-fueled chemistry. There's a kind of magic to it--hard to describe yet one we've seen ourselves at key moments, even for extended stretches of time now and then over the years...
Tell me YOU didn't see it, FEEL it during the Wuerfel-under-Spurrier times; then with TT, first the Heisman season then post-MSU/The Promise...and so on.
We LIVE to see it all again--not just the winning, but WINNING RIGHT AND FUN!!!

The Gators had their dark days, and our rivals enjoyed it. Our rivals are having dark days, and it is our turn to enjoy it.

Yeah, there's THAT--And I can't deny the satisfaction I naturally get in hearing this news, and in general at seeing the arrogant bastards laid low... But I am ALSO trying to recall and rely more upon "the angels of our better nature" here: In the long run, it isn't Volunteer (or anyone ELSE'S) poor fortune and unfortunate practical development over all that will get US where WE wanna go; it will be OUR hard work and belief in OURSELVES that will ultimately accomplish that. I'm no saint--I too will likely go on getting a certain kick out of these rivals' misfortunes...but I'd like to think we're aiming higher, too.

Maybe we should but I'm sure they were people taking shots at the Gators when during the Meyer's days where those were great times (minus 2010). Plus the offseason was rough with players getting kicked out.

Can't argue with anything you say here--Hell, I find myself often muttering, sometimes YELLING back at the screen (laptop AND television) on a daily basis at the asinine bs spewing forth from fans and media commentators alike! They don't like us and miss no opportunity to grind their axes at our benefit. So when it comes down TO it, whatever befalls them and THEIRS, whether poor luck or poor judgement, "GOOD ON 'EM!!!"
No, I'm no saint--and when it comes to defending our beloved reptiles, that just ain't gonna change...

(...Meanwhile, looking ahead, I'd REALLY love to see us run this very manageable early stretch to enter the Auburn game at 5-and-0...THEN we can leave " the small stuff" behind, really get serious about the season, who and what we are--and just might BE. For now, it's the same old cliche, "take 'em one game at a time": We just CANNOT get ahead of ourselves. Screw up these supposed "lesser confrontations" and none of the rest will really matter--or even end up amounting to "what might have been" on anyone's radar in the FIRST place. So. This week, it's Tennessee Martin: Let's beat their ASSES, Boys!)

They are rivals. With UGA, UT, FSU, and Miami I hope they lose the following:
  • The game
  • Their shoes
  • Their money
  • Their wives
  • Their girlfriends
  • Their dogs
  • Their beer money
  • Their sanity
If they get erectile dysfunction and a case of spontaneous diarrhea, then so be it.

LOL Maybe I'd shift the above ORDER around a bit, but yeah: That about says it...
It so happens that MEANWHILE I happen to be watching the Marshall at Boise St game: It is the start of the 2nd half, and it is hard to fathom how the Criminoles managed to lose hosting a team that is itself having trouble at home this far into a game against the Marshall Thundering Herd...Oops--the much-ballyhooed Boise St QB just finally hit his receiver on a dead run in the open on like, the 2nd play of the 2nd half... and they finally break the 7-7 tie to take the lead.
Now, Marshall IS clearly a tough, well-coached squad--small-but-fast and they DO know how to tackle (hell--WE could do with some remedial coaching along these lines for OUR defense, based on what I saw against Miami!), but it is outright LAUGHABLE that FSU had so much trouble with a Boise St team that is having THIS much trouble with this level of opponent. Too bad we don't play them til the last game of the reg season: They'll have all that time, practice and game experience to improve before we'll get a crack at 'em...Still, on the whole and as a unit I can't find much cause for concern in going up against them, now or later!

Marshall shows one example of why Florida, FSU, and Miami are having problems with recruiting. Schools like Marshall have been poaching some of the best Sunshine State talent. Marshall has 23 kids from the Sunshine State. In West Virginia. Not just any 23, but the ones from winning Florida high schools. The ones who do not get arrested for marijuana, credit card fraud, and domestic assault. They might not be quite as fast, but they are in that sweet spot between good in talent and good in behavior.

It's Florida, almost every program recruits here.

...All true--But STILL:
You'd THINK we'd get "our fair share"--which you'd in turn think would be a GOOD portion...and as for "good in behavior", well, to a certain extent that has GOT to be a matter of either poor judgment or "willful blinders"--on the part of the recruiters, btw, in BOTH cases.
No. Blindly blundering "business as usual" out on the recruiting trail is killing a LOT of potential futures--and ONLY a return to clear-eyed, hard-hearted DETERMINATION, uncompromising ethics and values and follow through will likely improve the overall outlook for further developing talent at ANY of these programs in the long run, ourselves included.
But this is a "Me TOO" business: only in the event that someone dares to apply such values with uncompromising steadiness, clearly, openly and with eventual complete success will others dare to follow to any significant degree. Until then, it is and will continue to BE a "slippery dance in the pig trough".

I'm tired...burnt out earlier than EVER by the poor preparation, weak strategy and tactics, and general lack of balance or anything LIKE "a level playing field".
We ALL must swallow the bitter pill of "cynical realities" that set the stage and form the background of all we see out there in the course of another long Saturday.
Hell, OUR game not to mention the only two real "games of interest" (LSU at Texas and the Clemson/Texas A&M games) are still close to two full HOURS til they kick off, and I am actually already worn down to near apathetic boredom...I believe I will have to take a nap, try to recharge, do ANYTHING but watch another game for now...For now, I apologize and hope you are all successfully able to hang in there! Hopefully I will REjoin y'all shortly!
