Trey Burton's school-record six touchdowns power Florida past Kentucky 48-14

GAINESVILLE — "Trey Burton and the Florida offense finally gave the rest of the SEC something to fear.

And suddenly, after a 48-14 thumping of Kentucky, the Gators have legitimate confidence heading into Saturday's trip to face No. 1 Alabama.

Burton, who plays four positions and special teams, broke Tim Tebow's record by scoring six touchdowns and totaled 119 yards on 11 touches to lead No. 9 Florida (4-0, 2-0 in the SEC) to its most thorough and convincing victory of the season."

They looked GOOD on offense, too, this time. Still some things to work on, obviously, but with the exception of a bit of a relapse in the 2nd qtr., on the whole a satisfying performance--and if they continue to improve at the ever-accelerating pace they have so far they're on target to be GREAT in a month or so.
Whether we can beat the Tide at their place next week, hard to say, but that team IS beatable, and we definitely have the talent...if we don't put enough of the pieces together on the field in Tuscaloosa, maybe we lose next Saturday. But with the team I can see we WILL have operating in health and near peak efficiency by the end of the year I believe we won't fall to them twice.

Until then, I'm going to enjoy this win, content that this year's Gators are back on track to eventually reach their potential.
(For now, I'm even going to forgo worrying about the various glaring mistakes, let-downs and return-of-bad-habits that did arise, figuring we really can trust the coaches to deal with all of that.)
The one thing I AM concerned about is all the banged up bodies on the O-line. We've seen how much better everything goes on offense when the right guys are in their natural positions; they were JUST getting healthy. Now we may be back to that mess we had at the start of the season--and Demps got dinged up too!

Not only was this a message to Brantley, it was a reminder to Urban Meyer--we tend to do very well when we have two playmakers on the field at once, preferably one at QB. If it's not Brantley and Demps, it may be Burton and Demps.

I've been impressed with Trey Burton since the spring of 2009, and probably the one thing that really stood out was his being gung-ho about wanting to be a Gator. He showed us what he's capable of doing, and now he clearly won the #2 backup slot at QB - perhaps Brantley had his pride hurt a little bit last night, but yes, this could be perceived as a message telling Johnny that he needs to kick things up a notch.

I just hope Demps will be ready to play next Saturday in Bama; based on what I read on Twitter tonight he's in a boot and is walking with a slight limp. We should know more by tomorrow.

I keep referring to the Leak/Tebow relationship, because it fits so well here. It hurt Leak's pride somewhat to have people calling for his starting position and him losing snaps on short yardage, but by putting it aside Leak won a championship. Brantley has his chance to do the same--set aside his pride and lean on Burton. I am willing to bet JB will help out Burton and together they can both have good games.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment Escambia. The coming out party for Trey that was the game this past Sat. was merely a glimpse of the new and upgraded version of our 2-headed Qb from the 2005 Championship team.
I am anxious to see what other wrinkles are waiting to be featured in the coming Saturdays.......

Let him know that he needs to be a playmaker not just a game manager. Otherwise, Burton will be handling all the red zone offenses.

I don't agree. I think Brantley's starting spot is secure, and the fact is Burton is like 100% efficiency in the redzone. Meyer just kept using him because it kept working.

I do wonder if JB does not consistently impress by the end of the season, if Urban Meyer will modify his idea of an ideal high school QB recruit and avoid the pure passers who are not a running threat. Even Chris Leak was an above average runner when called upon. I suppose the way around this would be to continue alternating between the I-formation and the shotgun spread and keep the plays biased towards whomever is under center. I do like the two-head QB beast of JB and Trey.

If we were to go back to a two-QB system as we ran in 2006, we could add yet another "wrinkle" to our offense and perhaps a hint of unpredictability. What I really liked about the Leak-Tebow combo was that Urban was able to take advantage of each of their strengths out there in particular offensive situations to make it work in our favor, and now that we see what Burton's capable of doing this could be implemented again with himself and Brantley.

It appears you do agree. I don't think Brantley will lose his starting spot. I just think he will be on the sidelines when we get in the redzone. That's not as bad as losing your starting role but it's still pretty bad. Definitely going to kill his stats and NFL marketability. I also think a big part of Brantley's fate in the matter rests with Gillislee. When there's a running situation in the redzone, Gillislee is going to have to produce results. Otherwise we will have to put in Trey to get those yards. So even though Brantley isn't doing anything wrong, he's out of the game by default.

interesting point about Gillislee and the other RB's needing to get it done for Brantley. But I still don't think Brantley is the type of kid who is looking to get his NFL stock up right now. He just wants to win. And being pulled in the redzone isn't that bad. I've seen plenty of teams use the wildcat in the redzone. Although most teams use the starting RB/WR and not a backup QB.
