Gators disappointed about early exit at CWS

OMAHA, Neb. — "There was disappointment on the faces of Florida players as they filed toward the bus outside Rosenblatt Stadium in stone silence Monday.

Florida was the first of eight teams to be eliminated from the College World Series. But it didn't take away from what the Gators accomplished in the 2010 season.

Florida (47-17) posted its most wins in a season since 2005 and the fifth-most wins in a season in program history.

“Obviously, we're disappointed but we accomplished more than most teams did, to be one of eight teams to reach the College World Series,” Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. “Hopefully, we'll be fortunate to come back next year.”

There is no easy way to be the first team eliminated from a tournament like this, regardless of if you stormed into the CWS on a huge winning streak or just backed into it by the skin of your teeth. The Gators worked incredibly hard to earn their spot in Omaha, and every fan should be incredibly proud of them for that. That said, by their own standards this was just a miserable effort and I feel awful for them for having gone through this. They stayed tough early against UCLA, but once it started to slip away it quickly snowballed. Against Florida State they were behind the 8-ball for most of the game and showed some real fight late in the game, but it just wasn't enough.

They're a young team and that, among other things, definitely caught up with them in the CWS. Every player who returns to the team next season needs to remember what happened here and use it to help craft themselves, and their team, into something better than it was this season when it counts most. I have faith in the Gator baseball program to make a strong run for the CWS again and if they can get back I think they'll surprise a lot of people.

They had a heck of a season. They were young and basically dominated the SEC the entire season. Ran into some more experienced and veteran college world series teams in UCLA and the Creminoles.

Florida struggled at times last year too, and if it struggles again, it will be Thank shooting outside poor Walker. If Boynton and Florida will get more accurate outside shooting guard - and the Gators can get better defensively in almost every respect - they must avoid their fate worst: another good season-but-not-great, another early exit.
