Anthony Richardson had a bad day against Kentucky, but how does it rank among some of the worst in Gator history? In modern history he has two performances that rank among the worst. Here are the most recent QB performances with a game passer rating under 125.

Statistics are hard to find before 2005 or so, so I cut the numbers off at that point. I can think of some performances that should be on here:
- 1969 John Reaves throws 9 INTS vs Auburn
- 1999 Jesse Palmer went 7/20 for 80 yards and threw 3 interceptions

Yikes!
Puts it all in perspective (for whatever THAT'S worth right now), assuming that anyone finds any solace in it...I don't--and I doubt AR would either.
His "early buzz" sure took a hit, and he would not be a normal young man (a highly competitive one at that) if that didn't bother, even somewhat embarrass him. It's a hard road--a painful lesson, no matter what.
But he has a sensitive, supportive Head Coach who will almost certainly say, DO the "right things" in coming days to ensure this is a "positive growth experience". It certainly doesn't have to be a uniformly negative one!
In fact, given HOW young and inexperienced Anthony truly is (and was going INTO this game situation), handled CORRECTLY it COULD be an intensely VALUABLE step in his growth and eventual maturation into the great player his physical skills say is, if not inevitable, IS potentially there for him to achieve.

More perspective:

Geno Smith played 49 snaps across 10 games as a freshman in 2009 and had a season passer rating of 120.9. He was protected from bad days in his first 50-100 snaps by being groomed behind a veteran. In 2010 he was named starter and passed for 2,500 yards and a passer rating of 140—very much like Emory Jones but with more rushing yards. He had two bad games—LSU and Syracuse. 2011 was an excellent year as he passed for over 4,000 yards and a passer rating of 150. In 2012 he threw for 4,200 yards and a passer rating of 160. Unfortunately, Anthony Richardson did not have a solid veteran to shadow. Mullen messed up AR’s development by throwing him to the wolves without ramping him up slowly. Blame Richardson’s injury or Mullen’s stubbornness, but he hindered Richardson’s development. Napier has no choice but to throw a relatively young QB into the fire. I looked at other, similar QBs and noted that none of them were thrown at top-20 teams with top-10 defenses with fewer than 100 snaps as a backup and a couple games as starter against a cupcake.

The list of worst QBs above tells a story of mismanaging talent exacerbated by frequent coaching changes, except in the case of AR that mismanagement is with a young QB. Even though Richardson is a redshirt sophomore, his stats are comparable to a freshman and backup. His upside is being compared to draft-eligible QBs with 5,000 yards and 500 snaps and 20 starts—but he only has 867 passing yards, 125 snaps, and 3 starts!

The numbers I used for Geno Smith also hold for Vince Young. Dual threat QBs like Lamar Jackson and Johnny Manziel were thrown straight into the fire as freshmen, but they had consistent coaching from a stable staff and backups to save them.

The point is that Richardson is young as a QB even though we feel as if he has been around long enough to compare to Lamar Jackson or we forget that he lacks consistent development that Smith, Young, Jackson, and Manziel had. Maybe Richardson does not pan out. All I am saying is that at this time, in September of 2022, we cannot compare him to other dual threat QBs and should cut him some slack.

Again: @Escambia94, in particular, if only because he posted this Thread to start with...

Yes.
I cover parallel ground regarding AR over on "Give It to Us Straight..." here this morning.
As for "mismanagement", I also specifically
focus on Dan Mullen in this regard. SO...
Umpteenth Cliche: "No use crying over spillt milk", but he's a recent, glaring example of EXACTLY what you are talking about above.
However, "where we go from HERE" is what matters now.
We live in hope and anticipation.

Well, his rating LAST night wasn't so bad, it turns out. Still, I would frankly opine we NOT too closely apply statistical scrutiny to Anthony at this point. There are so many subtleties and finer points of learning and experience he still has ahead of him to absorb and APPLY...
With them he can be FORMIDABLE; BUT until then he is like a lump of steel--full of strength and potential, but unshaped still JUST that--not yet anything in particular at ALL.
An extreme case of "jumping the gun", of "too much, too soon" on the part of people who have too much time, too many words, too much SPACE to fill before they've hardly SEEN ANYTHING in the way of "EVIDENCE".
Then they get a LITTLE, and think it justifies a complete TURNAROUND.
I know YOU aren't doing either here, E--, but I would still recommend we ALL "reserve judgement" on this kid.
So far, with Coach's help he seems to be keeping an even keel, at least outwardly. But these wild performance swings are troubling: Why is OUR "freak of nature" having the adjustment difficulties evidently afflicting him, while gifted young men elsewhere are coming quickly into their own? Is it JUST the lack of experience? (once again: "SCREW Dan Mullen!!!" "QB-Whisperer" indeed! HA!)
Whatever it is, from this point forward we are depending on Napier and his offensive people to bring him along--IF they have the TIME to get it done. My fear NOW is that these "pro-SCOUTS" supposedly in such hot pursuit if him are creating a false reality, setting the kid up for a fall BECAUSE under the current rules THEY CAN. They might RUIN a kid with misjudgment/mismanagement--but they WON'T MISS on one...THEIR job is NOT to.
Anthony Richardson and his family are from the East side of Gainesville. A southern small-city hood. They are good people, honest and hard working, but the kind of money-talk wafting around a potential "top first round" NFL contract is LIFE CHANGING. But "WINNING THE LOTTERY" doesn't always turn out to be "the story with the happy ending".
The young man needs EXPERIENCE in the skills, yes, but also the ROLE of "Quarterback/Team Leader"...He shows every sign of having that within himself--he can GET there. IF that will happen, and/or HOW it will happen are the big questions now. A very touchy situation: Billy has to navigate carefully--and consider the longterm course of his team and tenure here at UF, as WELL as steering AR to maximum success and effectiveness.
What would be great I think is if Anthony were to publicly commit himself to one more year here at UF regardless--take the pressure off HIMSELF and everyone else. Trust himself and his coaches to get him where he needs to be (and possibly turn out that "Gator Legend" after ALL!).

My conclusions:
- Anthony Richardson’s development was hampered by being placed in a bad situation as an inexperienced QB with little grooming from his previous coaches, but expected to perform as a veteran despite being in a brand new system.
- Feleipe Franks’ development was hampered by having a new OC each year under two head coaches.
- Jeff Driskel’s development was hampered by being recruited by the previous coach for a different system without any grooming.
- John Brantley’s development was hampered by being recruited to the wrong school, groomed for the wrong offense, and having an entirely new coaching staff.
- Treon Harris, Malik Zaire, Tyler Murphy had no business being recruited to Florida as QBs.
- Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby could have turned out better with coaching continuity at Florida.

These kids all have excuses, but it does not change the fact that they all show up on this ignominious list of the worst QB performances since 2006. I blame Urban Meyer for causing these ripples in time that led to constant churn with coaching staffs and interrupted QB development.

It really IS a sad, dark and frustrating tale of neurotic selfishness and short-SIGHTEDNESS.
..."constant churn" in the "ripples of time"?
"Quantum entanglement" again arises as a factor here?
(The latest theory suggests it is a wide-ranging factor in all sorts of cause/effect quandaries...)

I'm not sure I would rush down that road; So MANY possible variations, endless permutations, endless "threads" to be followed and kept track of--and perhaps at BEST maybe just ONE, if ANY, that holds usable information.
The STATISTICAL list you present ITSELF suggests many interesting paths-of-thought worth examining, weighing in importance as far as information implicit in such consideration.

All in all, I am struck by what a SAD MESS it made of what "woulda/shoulda/coulda" been a LARADE of potential talent.
Urban Meyer created an enormous opportunity for longterm stability and success--then proceeded to scramble and ultimately deform the whole process. He created chaos out of order, a classic case of turning "Victory into Defeat"!

Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer each shared visions of long term program building. Dan Mullen did succeed in building Florida as an offensive powerhouse. I hope to look back on this thread in a few years and not have to add any of Billy Napier’s QBs to this list ever again.

In related news, Emory Jones is about to undergo another coaching change. There is a meme going around showing EJ5 as the grim reaper of college coaches. He committed to Urban Meyer right before Urbs quit the job at Ohio State during NCAA sanctions. He had Dan Mullen quit on him after committing NCAA violations. Now Herm Edwards has quit on him after committing major NCAA violations. Poor kid. Despite all this, his passer rating remained respectable.

The flipside of THAT is all the Gator EX-Quarterbacks who eventually go on to CATCH on in the NFL--as backups, maybe, but in that league injury-attrition means a likely "eventual chance to PLAY"! Jacoby Brisset is the latest...Do I recall a list you've already put out SOMEWHERE/someWHEN here earlier, E--?
If not, it is certainly a trend that now BEGS your attention, no?

I need to update my list of Gators in the NFL, including the ones like Jacoby Brissett and Cam Newton who transferred out as sophomores.

Speaking of Cam Newton, he has fond memories of Aaron Hernandez and the Florida Gators. Cam just needed time away from troublemakers to grow into a Heisman QB.

Well, "creativity" does tend to spring from a place that has extremes of light AND darkness...and in its most dazzling forms often gives rise to descriptions ranging from the most positive ("genius!" and beyond), to somewhat LESS...
We are possibly witnessing that kind of "backlash" even as we discuss THIS:
I refer of course to the knee-jerk overreaction to Anthony Richardson's travails here in the early going of what amounts to his FIRST YEAR--as a SOPHOMORE STARTER!
In the context of this particular thread‐-and the WIDER one of what might be entitled "The Unfortunate History of Repeated Mishandling of High-Potential Ex-Gator Quarterbacks"--whereas much of the blame before now can be laid at the feet of particular Gator Coaches AND the timing of the procession of coaching regime's itself, the high expectations and fishbowl pressure and impatience from Gator fans hasn't helped to nurture talent OR security...I support THIS Coach's apparent determination to ignore "outside opinion" and public ridicule; If we are to have ANY chance of seeing AR's prodigious talent develop and eventually dazzle the CFB World as a GATOR, I believe it is by NOW becoming clear that he may well need to slow down, allow himself the time, experience and growth under the guidance of this Coach and staff AND the COMPETION here in the SEC--and probably NOT just for the rest of THIS season, but 2023 as well...But between the outside HYPE and the public's impatience, that may not have a CHANCE to happen. The eventual details may sound different, but ultimately his might become ANOTHER "Tale of a Gator QB that got away from us before his time!".
