UF Men's Golfer Billy Horschel Named To The Ben Hogan Award Watch List

NORMAN, Okla. Florida junior Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) is one of 24 players who were named to The Ben Hogan Award watch list honoring the nation’s top collegiate golfer, it was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.

The most prestigious award in men’s college golf, The Hogan is presented annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or junior college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months.

Horschel, the 2007 SEC Player of the Year, was a semifinalist for the award last year. The junior is one of three returning PING First-Team All-America selections on the list joining Southern Cal’s Jamie Lovemark and Clemson’s Kyle Stanley. Horschel’s Walker Cup teammates Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State and Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson are also in the group.

Horschel currently ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in scoring average at 71.17 in 12 rounds. The two-time All-American holds two top-five finishes this season, including a tie for third at the Jerry Pate National and a tie for fourth at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.

Horschel missed two tournaments in the fall to compete for the United States at the 41st Walker Cup at Royal County Down in Ireland. He posted a 3-1 record and helped the U.S. complete a 12.5 to 11.5 win over the European squad. Horschel also competed at the 107th U.S. Amateur and went undefeated on the U.S. Palmer Cup team last summer.

Horschel holds UF’s lowest round of the season with a 64 at the Jerry Pate, and his eight rounds at or under par are a team best. Matt Every is the only UF golfer to ever win The Ben Hogan Award having earned the honor in 2006.

The Hogan Award semifinalists will be announced April 16. Three finalists named on May 7 will be invited to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, for The Hogan Award presentation on the evening of May 18. The 1964 U.S. Open winner and former CBS golf analyst Ken Venturi will be the keynote speaker.
