UF climbing team competes in Texas

Six students from the University of Florida climbing team are in Austin, Texas, this weekend to shine light on the flat state of Florida by competing in the nation's first Collegiate Climbing Series.

"Many climbers think that because we're from a flat state, we can't climb," club president Sarah Goldberger said.
Goldberger, a second-year telecommunications production student, started the sports club in November 2008 by posting flyers around the Gainesville Rock Gym. The team, which has about 25 climbers, participated in five competitions around the state in the spring to qualify for today's national competition, she said.
Myrick, a U.S. climbing team coach, said he hopes the Collegiate Series will broaden the sport's racial diversity and increase its visibility to show people that climbing is a legitimate sport, not a fringe activity or extreme sport.
It's been one of his dreams to see climbing as a collegiate sport, Myrick said, adding that he hopes climbing will eventually help students earn college scholarships just as they would if they played football or basketball.
UF will compete against 15 other universities from around the country.
