Florida redshirt senior offensive lineman Phil Trautwein was named the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club of South Jersey Division I FBS 2008 Player of the Year, announced by the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club Wednesday morning.

As a Voorhees, N.J., native, Trautwein was named the Division I FBS 2008 Player of the Year for his contributions to the University of Florida football program, and qualified for the prestigious award as a college senior who played his high school football in South Jersey. Trautwein played his high school career at Eastern High School prior to his first season as a Gator in 2004.

Trautwein has seen action in 42 games at Florida to date as a member of the UF front five, recording 25 career starts. A 2008 team captain and member of the Football Leadership Committee, Trautwein has started all 10 of UF’s games this season at left tackle, consistently grading out a champion, with his season-best effort against Kentucky on Homecoming Oct. 25. Trautwein turned in a grade of 100 percent as a member of head coach Urban Meyer’s Champions’ Club against UK.

Trautwein has not only excelled on the football field, but also in the classroom. After earning his undergraduate degree in Family, Youth and Community Sciences last December, Trautwein is one of four senior Gator football players enrolled in grad school, and will earn his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from UF this December.

A 2006 second team All-SEC selection and member of the 2006 SEC and National Championship teams, Trautwein will be honored by the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club of South Jersey at the annual awards ceremony banquet Dec. 16, 2008, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Trautwein and his UF senior counterparts will be honored as a part of Senior Day prior to the start of UF’s last home game of the season against The Citadel Saturday.
