The Florida Gators finally have a staff that enjoys recruiting and is historically good at it! I looked through the history of recruiting done by the Mullen staff and the Napier staff and looked for some trends.

- The best recruiter at a particular school was Billy Napier during his time at Alabama when his average recruit rating was 0.9344.
- The best recruits who signed at Florida were signed by Mullen (with Urban Meyer's help), Brian Johnson, and Patrick Toney:
1. Tim Tebow 2006 (Dan Mullen and Urban Meyer)
2. Jason Marshall 2021 (Brian Johnson)
3. Kamari Wilson 2022 (Patrick Toney)
4. Shemar James 2022 (Patrick Toney)
5. Xzavier Henderson 2020 (Brian Johnson)
- The best recruits who signed at any school were signed by Sean Spencer, Billy Napier, Corey Raymond, Tim Brewster, and Mike Peterson:
1. Micah Parsons to Penn State (Sean Spencer)
2. Cam Robinson to Alabama (Billy Napier)
3. Derek Stingley to LSU (Corey Raymond)
4. Marvin Wilson to FSU (Tim Brewster)
5. Jordan Burch to South Carolina (Mike Peterson)
- The best recruiters of blue chips (career or multi-year average at a school) was Billy Napier, Corey Raymond, Brian Johnson, and Patrick Toney.
- The best recruiters over a career was Corey Raymond, Tim Brewster, Brian Johnson, Dan Mullen, and Jay Bateman.
- The best recruiters for Florida over multiple years were Corey Raymond, Brian Johnson, Patrick Toney, Dan Mullen, and Tim Brewster

@Escambia94,
So the (in retrospect, now moot) question with respect to Mullen would remain:
"WTF HAPPENED??!"
He sure seemed to lose his interest AND/OR his "edge" season-by-season as our Head Coach...
Fortunately though it DOES appear a "moot question":
With the talented Mr. Napier here now leading his hand-picked staff of enthusiastic trail-hounds, it begins to seem a recruiting Renaissance is in the works at UF football. It has been a while since anything LIKE it has manifested here.
Should this trend continue, momentum and quality steadily gather, well, things should get truly interesting over the next couple/few years!

I think Dan Mullen’s blind loyalty to Grantham and Hevesy did him in. I am sure the players were fed up with those two, which hurt locker room cohesion that was already stressed out by COVID and social justice issues in 2020. The NCAA recruiting violations hurt their ability to recruit, which was only exacerbated by the departure of their best recruiter, Brian Johnson. Mullen further divided the locker room and the fanbase by starting Emory Jones and not explaining his misuse of Anthony Richardson in 2021.

If Mullen had fired Grantham and Hevesy in 2020 and not had the recruiting violation that December I think the Gators win 9 games. If he had kept Brian Johnson or actually replaced him with someone other than a grad assistant the Gators could have beaten anyone but Georgia (maybe even them with more use of a healthy Richardson).

Agreed, on all points.
This is exactly why I describe the whole mess as "mostly moot" at this point:
Frustratingly inexplicable as Mullen's stubbornness and insistent inflexibility seemed, at this point our growing emergence from that cloud of stumbling foolishness under the new regime thankfully seems to be having exactly the healing effects needed and hoped for throughout the declining decade and more we have increasingly suffered through since our last Championship seasons.
Though the roots no doubt go back deeper and further, one can at least definitely pinpoint the glaring "downward turning point" in that 2009 SEC Championship game, TT frantically stalking the sidelines in the second half, trying in vain to rally his teammates, to ignite in them the passion and will they'd once found on their own within themselves.
Once that was gone, it was bound to be a long time before it was reborn and rebuilt here once more. We can only hope and begin to believe its spark is back, needing only careful nurturing and determination under a whole new group of talented young "believers" assembled and led by Billy Napier.
So far, all we really have are "signs"--signs of the POSSIBILITIES: Of what "CAN be done", given us all "pulling together", fans patiently supporting the necessary "rough patch" between what years of mismanagement have wrought, and everything Napier and his staff can do with the growing potential of "raw materials" that continued zealous recruiting promises to assemble in Gainesville.
It isn't likely to be an "overnight" result.
Oh, we could surprise some of those folks in the media who are picking us behind everyone but Vanderbilt this season--but we are aiming a lot higher than THAT, in the long run. We've got to do a whole lot more than simply "exceed lowered expectations".
This time it is important for us all to be clear-eyed in our patience, and realistically balanced in how we weigh and ultimately judge the work and progress of this group--who are, after all, in effect STARTING OVER FROM SCRATCH.
Let us support them based on the whole team's spirit and progress in that context, season-by-season from here--"starting from ZERO with a clean slate", if we can possibly manage that fair a P.O.V.

Remember that Dan Mullen left Florida at the end of the 2008 season. I am not saying that he was the lynchpin of the coaching staff, but it seems that the coaches and players fell apart around that time.

My concern is that Florida may be doomed to repeat this cycle of changing out coaching staffs every 3-4 years. Maybe Napier will be different. He seems different, but so did Urban Meyer at first.

Well, at least Napier's imperfections, whatever they may be, do not appear to be of the "to hell with honor and integrity" nature that Urban's turned out to be. That "deal with the devil" approach seems guaranteed to "reap the whirlwind" at some point down the line.
So far at least there's clearly a "good vibe" surrounding our new Coach that not just prospective recruits but all who come in contact with him appear to react well too.
No matter what, it would seem a new culture has come to UF football--and something like it was way overdue, wouldn't y'all agree?
