The Southeastern Conference tabbed University of Florida junior pitcher Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) its Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today.
Nelson finished last week with a 3-0 record in four appearances and a 0.00 ERA. She pitched three complete game shutouts, including two over North Carolina, 1-0 and 4-0, who is receiving votes in both softball polls. In 26.0 innings she struck out 30 batters, while giving up only 11 hits, none of which were for extra bases. She held opponents to only a .126 batting average on the week. She walked only six of the 97 batters she faced. Eight of the 11 hits Nelson gave up were to North Carolina. Five of those hits came in the Gators 1-0, 9-inning victory on Sunday. Nelson pitched the complete nine innings.
This is the third conference athlete of the week honor Nelson has earned in her career. This is the second SEC Pitcher of the Week honor for Nelson, as she also earned the honor on March 26, 2007 after wins over Georgia, Princeton and Florida International. In 2006, Nelson was named SEC Freshman of the Week on March 20 after wins over Ole Miss.
The No. 10 Gators (13-0) return to action on Wednesday night with a single game against Hofstra at 5 p.m. This weekend they will host Gardner-Webb, North Florida and Notre Dame in the Aquafina Invitational.
