Softball's Nelson Adds Second Pitcher of the Week Honor

Gainesville, FL University of Florida junior pitcher Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) has earned her second Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week award, the league announced today. This is the first time in school history a Gator has earned the honor in back-to-back weeks.

Nelson went 5-0 and set a new school record as she extended her school-record shut out innings streak to 46.2 innings before giving up a run to Notre Dame on Saturday. She struck out a career-high 13 batters against Notre Dame on Sunday. Nelson also recorded six consecutive strikeouts in the first through third innings and struck out the side in both the second and seventh innings. She came into the game in relief in the top of the sixth against Gardner-Webb with the game tied 3-3 to earn the win. In 30 innings pitched, she recorded a 0.70 ERA and struck out 40 batters.

This is the fourth conference athlete of the week honor Nelson has earned in her career. This is the third SEC Pitcher of the Week honor for Nelson, as she also earned the honor on March 26, 2007 and last week after the Cox Communications Classic. In 2006, Nelson was named SEC Freshman of the Week on March 20.

The No. 7/10 Gators (19-0) will go on the road this week for the fist time in 14 games. The Gators travel out west for a single game with Long Beach State at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. This weekend the Gators will play in the Worth Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton and face Oregon State (rv), Pacific, No. 23/24 Cal State Fullerton, Louisville (rv) and No. 12/13 Stanford. All the games in the Worth Invitational will be broadcast live on GatorZone.com.
