I’m so excited about seeing where we’re at and where we are headed under Jon Sumrall and this strong staff—All the things I feel they can begin to build and begin to accomplish with the group of talented players on a squad that will only get STRONGER, I think, on BOTH sides of the ball, as time goes on.
I was so amped up about the coming season that I even got excited and TRIED to watch all the games that I could stream here in “Week 0”…
Uh, no.
Poorly played mismatches, generally. (Well, the UNC vs TCU game over in Dublin wasn’t a “mismatch”; the final score makes it look like a “defensive struggle”, but in truth it was just a display of two inept offenses stinking up the joint…Some display of our “great college game”!)
I suppose the kinds of terribly timed foul ups and repeated miscues are to be expected in these first games—but I also believe, from what we’ve seen and heard of our new Coach and his staff in the months leading up to the season opener, that though SOME mistakes, even a certain early sloppiness is to be expected, the kind of consistent total let downs I witnessed today may come in streaks by certain teams (who not surprisingly THIS time in a number of cases ended up on the wrong end of lopsided scores that headed that way early and often) would have, were we to see any small PART of it come next Saturday, Jon Sumrall TEARING HIS HAIR OUT on the sidelines to see at all, let alone REPEATEDLY, even in Game 1.
SOME slight sloppiness early is possible, of course—the odd ill-timed miscue resulting in a 5-yard penalty, well, he won’t like it, possibly even demonstrably so, but I think he will take it in stride. NO one will get too MANY such chances, however. At a certain point I think we’ll see some sideline fireworks if any kind of PATTERN of such errors begins to show.
And I ALSO think that kind of demonstrative refusal to “take it in stride” was clearly long overdue during the Napier-years. I do not expect perfection in Week 1; neither do I expect a whole lot of patience from this Head Coach should there be more than a few minor snags EARLY—and they damn well BETTER get mainly cleared up and GONE in Week 2 if the penciled in early starters expect to retain and develop further in that role.

I (somewhat anxiously AND superstitiously) refrained from logging in here until I had gotten a look at how we would begin “This New Gator Era” ON THE FIELD.
An INT, then two consecutive (and impressively driving) touchdown drives.
14-0 Gators 8 minutes into the game. So far, so good.
The defense, which “bent” but didn’t “break” on that first Owl possession, appears now to be settling down, gaining strength and confidence.
