Murphy gets 6th year, will play at Northeastern

Former Florida forward Alex Murphy has been granted a sixth year by the NCAA and will play next season at Northeastern.

The NCAA approved Murphy’s sixth year on Wednesday, ending a four-month long process in which the former Duke and Florida player had to produce medical records from both schools. Murphy dealt with a head injury during his first season at Duke, and sat out the majority of last season at UF due to a torn plantar fascia he suffered in UF’s preseason game.

With an uncertain status for this season, Murphy and Florida parted ways last June in an amicable split. Florida coach Mike White wrote a letter of support to help Murphy obtain his sixth year. The Gators added depth at the forward position over the spring with the addition of 6-6 graduate transfer Canyon Barry and incoming 6-8 freshman forward Dontay Bassett.

At Northeastern, the 6-7 Murphy should get more a chance to be a primary scoring option while playing closer to home. A Wakefield, R.I. native, Murphy averaged 5.1 points in 20 games for Florida during the 2014-15 season and 3.3 points in three games last season.

Murphy’s younger brother, Tomas, a Class of 2017 recruit, committed to Northeastern in late August.
