Meyer confronts Jeremy Fowler for article..

Florida coach Urban Meyer is trying to mellow out as he attempts to improve his health, but he was plenty stressed at Wednesday’s spring practice.

As practice wound down and players slowly exited the field, Meyer approached a reporter from the Orlando Sentinel in front of about two dozen media members and had a heated exchange over an article the reporter had written about receiver Deonte Thompson.

“You’re a bad guy, man. You’re a bad guy,” Meyer told Sentinel reporter Jeremy Fowler. “If that was my son we’d be going at it right now.”

Meyer was upset at an article entitled “Florida Gators WR Deonte Thompson sounds happy to usher in post-Tebow era” in which Fowler singled out a quote from Thompson calling John Brantley “a real quarterback.”

Several other media members, both at the Sentinel and at national outlets like ESPN, Jim Rome and The Sporting News, picked up the quote and interpreted it as an insult of Tim Tebow. And Thompson, a native of Belle Glade, was vilified in media and internet message boards throughout Tuesday and Wednesday as a player with a poor attitude.

Meyer got right in Fowler’s face for taking Thompson’s quote out of context, called Thompson “a great kid” and threatened to have the Sentinel entirely removed from Gator football media opportunities.

“I told you this five years ago – don’t mess with our players. Don’t do it – you did it,” Meyer said. “You do it one more time and the Orlando Sentinel’s not welcome here ever again. Is that clear? It’s yes or no.”

Fowler appeared surprised by Meyer’s advances.

“Urban, come on. Don’t make any threats. That’s fine. I’ll play by rules,” Fowler said. “I’ll play by the rules, but all I was doing is quoting the guy. I don’t think I was the only one.”

Meyer eventually walked away from the scene and pointed at Fowler while standing next to his oldest daughter, Nikki, who was home from Georgia Tech on spring break and attending practice. Twenty minutes later, Meyer was escorted off the practice field by truck through a back gate instead of walking past the media contingent at the regular gate.

Meyer, trying to lessen his workload and ease his stress since being hospitalized last December and briefly quitting his job, has not spoken with the media since the first day of spring practice eight days ago.

Before the incident, it was clear the Gators did not like the way the Thompson quote had ballooned into a national story. During the middle of Wednesday’s practice, the team informed reporters that it had cut off media access to all coaches and players for Wednesday’s practice.

Noteworthy: Brantley, the team’s only veteran quarterback, missed practice with what the team described as the flu and possible strep, but Brantley also injured his knee in Monday’s practice. … Running back Emmanuel Moody injured his right ankle and left the field in crutches, and receiver T.J. Lawrence was sent to the hospital for an undisclosed reason.

Good: UM has his fire back. Bad: He may need to use a lot of it this year. I can safely predict a rough year for the Gators in the news.

Good: Brantley has everyone excited about year one of the post-Tebow era. Bad: the entire season may rest on his health.

Uncertain: Whose side are the local papers on, any way? Most college towns have a paper that is slightly biased in their favor or as close to neutral as is possible by today's standards. Other than the Gainesville Sun, who can we depend on?

You know, I was thinking the same thing. I trust the Gainesville Sun, Gator Country, and I like Ben Volin from the Palm Beach Post(Gator Bytes) as well. I seem to always have the same opinion as he does. Adam over at OGGOA is probably good to trust too.

Good for Coach Meyer - living in Orlando, I despise the "Slantinel" with a passion. I only wish it was Andrea Adelson on the receiving end of Meyer's ire as she deserves it in so many ways, but nobody can say that they didn't have it coming to them, especially with the way they misconstrue things that are said, fuel the rumor mills and stir up controversy with the intent to elicit a negative reaction from Gator Nation's readers, the latter of which Adelson has a penchant for doing; lest we forget, SHE was the one who caused all the uproar last summer when she accused Meyer of calling out Shane Matthews when (1) he didn't even name names and (2) she didn't even bother to get her facts straight when reporting on the Orlando Gator Gathering. If Coach read the latest crap she printed about his owing an "explanation" about the retraction of his earlier decision to resign last December and his health issues, he'd really be pissed.

Maybe now Jeremy Fowler will learn his place and cut the crap. To him Meyer is nothing more than a "job flip-flopper", and as far as I'm concerned he got a dose of his own medicine today. Coach was only looking out for the best interests of the program and his players, and did nothing out of line - Fowler was out of bounds.

And oh yeah - screw the Orlando Sentinel.

(P.S. I had a "TOTT" blog article planned for tonight, but I'll be putting together something by this weekend including my thoughts on this. Just out of random lurking around other Gator boards, the vast majority of posters are siding with Coach; aside from the miniscule number of media apologists defending Fowler, it's nice to see that Gator Nation has Coach's back. I only wish somebody would rip Adelson another orifice down there........

Love that pic BTW, Johnny. What a punk that Fowler is. )

How 'bout the

My main complaint from the Alligator as a student newspaper is that other than sports, I cannot stand the left-leaning news that is prevalent on campus. Besides, they rarely put in good stuff about the engineering department when I was going to school there.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with what coach did or the way he handled himself and I 100% agree! When I first read the quote I knew this was going to start media blitz as we are talking about the Gators, Tebow and Coach Meyer. I was just explaining to my son how people love to tear down the Teams, People, or Coaches are the best in their field and this is all we have seen for the last 2 years.

I can't wait to see the Gators this year and as always....

Agreed. I'm working on my latest segment of Talk of the Town, and I hope to have it up by this weekend.

After all the attacks on Coach Meyer from those bozos at the Slantinel over the years, they asked for what they got yesterday. It's time for all of those hacks to reap what they sow.

Even worse, Fowler and that biatch Adelson are supposedly UF alums. IMHO they both ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Reading the link to another forum from here. wow. i can't believe the amount of cry baby bleeding heart thin skinned liberals we have among us. "waaaaah urban was too hard on the guy. wahhhhh wahhh wahhh" FFS, people. Grow some damn balls. Urban simply told it how it was and if the kid don't want to report things the way they're suppose to be and not spin them, then get the heck out of there. Wish people would learn to stick up for themselves and applaud others who stick up for themselves, and their team.

Damn straight. Just because somebody has media credentials doesn't give them carte blanche to spin stories away from the facts to their own liking and cause a stir wherever they go. If Fowler has one iota of intelligence, he'll hold true to his promise to "play by the rules", tell the truth, and give Coach Meyer the respect he's earned instead of accusing him of being a "job flip-flopper" repeatedly beyond the point of triteness. Adelson better govern herself accordingly as well; if she thinks readers aren't on to her true motives, she's an idiot.

I'm lurking over at GC in the thread they have going, and I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading. Most of the responses are sensible, but some fans over there are defending Fowler - that, or calling out Coach for setting that hack straight - somebody even thinks Meyer should apologize to Fowler - BULLSHIT, I say. His apologizing to anybody at the Slantinel would be almost as bad as the American people apologizing to Osama Bin Laden.

Bottom line - it's time for all this unprofessional journalism to stop. All they need to do is just report the freaking news - not keep looking for smoke where there's no fire.

One thing the national media is doing is making it look as if this were the Slantinel's first transgression and all of a sudden Urban Meyer is losing his temper on Jeremy Fowler. What the liberal media does not show is the rest of the story. I am not certain anything will change out of this, especially if the Slantinel starts gaining public support and Meyer gets cast as the mean ogre. Draft day will be interesting. Be prepared.

I think the Orange and Blue game will have a wider national audience now.

The news from today's practice should be very interesting, reporters have access once again.
