Julia Cohen Named SEC W-Tennis Freshman of the Week

Gainesville, FL The University of Florida's Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

This is the first year the conference has added a weekly award to recognize outstanding freshmen and Cohen becomes the first-ever Gator to receive the honor.

Since joining the team in January, Cohen has yet to lose a singles or doubles match in her collegiate career, last week extending her singles and doubles records by two to improve to 6-0 in singles and 7-0 in doubles. She has played the No. 1 singles position every time she has taken the court and has won every decision in straight sets and has not lost more than three games in any of those sets. Cohen is the first Gator freshman to open a season playing the No. 1 singles position since Anouschka Popp in 1994.

"Julia is so tough and plays so much more mature than a freshman," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "What I like about her game most is that she is so smart on the court. She will find a way to get under her opponent’s skin and do something they don’t like."

Last week, Cohen defeated Florida State's Katie Rybakova 6-3, 6-3 to earn her first collegiate win over a ranked opponent. Rybakova was ranked 46th at the start of the match, but ranked 16th the week prior.

Also against the Seminoles, Cohen paired with Anastasia Revzina and notched her first win over a ranked doubles team, pairing to defeat the 40th-ranked team. Cohen also jumped into the national singles rankings at No. 74 last week after playing just four matches.

Cohen and Florida return to action on Friday, February 29th, when the team begins its SEC schedule playing host to No. 14 Vanderbilt beginning at 5 p.m. Admission to all regular-season matches at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex is FREE!

This girl is great! To be the #1 seed as a freshman on a woman's tennis team is rare. Go Gators!
