The Houston Texans fell 27–7 to the Chargers, but the real story for us Gator fans was Mertz’s early exit after a non‑contact injury. Expected to get the bulk of snaps as Houston’s No. 3 QB, he instead left for testing — and the team now fears he suffered a torn ACL, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mertz, drafted in the sixth round in 2025, had been competing to hold his spot behind C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills. His efficient 2023 season in Gainesville (2,903 yards, 20 TD, 3 INT) helped earn him that opportunity, showcasing the accuracy and ball security that defined his lone year with the Gators.

Sorry to hear it: The young man has had no luck, injury-wise…One has to wonder whether it is indeed “bad luck”, the wrong kind of body for this particular sport—or maybe one more example of how poorly the particular program and approach of the FORMER Gator staff conditioned its athletes and prepared them for the general beating their bodies were destined to face at the highest levels of college AND professional football!
As we’ve seen and continue to see, starting, for example, with DJ Lagway and working through much of an otherwise talented Gator line-up that has faced so many similar challenges, until finding themselves under the care and supervision of a staff with a whole DIFFERENT regime.
It begins in the training room months BEFORE even SPRING practice gets under way and builds from there.
The theory (and fervent hope) is that not only are they bigger faster and healthier along the way, but by the time they hit the field for actual games these are bodies much less “injury-prone”.
Well, we shall see: We’ve seen what “doing things another way” produced, and a change would sure be welcome and seemingly an improvement.
This may be another typically grueling “gauntlet” of an SEC season, but at least the first couple of games SHOULD give this squad a chance to “get its legs under themselves”, get a good idea of who needs to be out there when, and in general work UP to a certain comfort-level BEFORE that “gauntlet” is truly before them.

The history books are filled with stories of athletes who could have been good or great but suffered injury or some other thing that happens in life. Something like 0.05% of high school athletes make it to the professional league in their sport, and 1% of them make it a career. Mertz gets paid maybe $800k this year, which is not life changing money but that is between 4 and 10 years worth of a UF graduate salary in today's market. This illustrates the value of a degree for the 99%+ who play college athletics and will not make professional sports their career.
