Florida to face Duke on Dec. 6

News Bot
The time and date of the Florida-Duke matchup in the Jimmy V Classic has been set.

The Gators and Blue Devils will play on Dec. 6 at Madison Square Garden in New York City at 9 p.m. on ESPN, after the end of the opening game between Arizona State and Purdue (7 p.m.).

To say that Florida will be tested facing Duke next season is an understatement. The Blue Devils are early choice for preseason No. 1 going into the 2016-17 season, with junior guard Grayson Allen returning and an incoming freshman class that includes 6-10 power forward Harry Giles, the top-rated recruit in the Class of 2016 , 6-9 forward Jayson Tatum (No. 3 Class of 2016) and 6-4 point guard Frank Jackson (No. 10 Class of 2016). Of course, there’s also the challenge of facing Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has won five national titles.

Florida and Duke haven’t played each other since 2000, when the Gators beat the Blue Devils in the Sweet 16. Another interesting storyline — Florida coach Mike White’s father, Kevin White, is the AD at Duke.

Other notes:

– Per ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman, Virginia Tech transfer guard Jalen Hudson plans to visit Florida this weekend. Hudson, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound sophomore, shot 34.6 percent from 3-point range last season. Under transfer rules, though, Hudson would have to sit out next season unless he receivers a waiver. With forward Alex Murphy still awaiting word whether he’s been granted a sixth year by the NCAA, and the signing of 2016 center Gojok Gak earlier this week, Florida has just one scholarship to give to either Murphy, Hudson or 6-6 swingman Canyon Barry, a grad transfer who visited UF earlier this month. Barry, the son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry, still plans to visit Northwestern and Miami before making his decision.
