Can Finney-Smith make All-SEC first team?

The SEC will release its men’s basketball all-first and second teams on Tuesday, and senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith is on the bubble.

Finney-Smith looked like a sure-fire All-SEC first team selection when he scored 20 or more points in five of six games in late January in early February. His production has dipped since opposing teams have focused on taking him away, but Finney-Smith is coming off a 20-point, 7-rebound game against Missouri, his fifth SEC game scoring 20 or more points this season (he scored 24 in January vs. West Virginia).

For the second straight season, Finney-Smith leads the Gators in scoring (15 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). He ranks 15th in the league in scoring and 5th in rebounding.

The team is voted on by coaches throughout the league and, last year’s first team included nine players. It stands to reason that Finney-Smith could nab first-team honors. The definite players ahead of him include the Kentucky backcourt tandem of Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray, LSU forward Ben Simmons, Ole Miss guard Stefan Moody and Tennessee guard Kevin Punter.

Finney-Smith is on a second-tier list of players that includes Texas A&M forwards Jalen Jones and Danuel House, South Carolina forward Michael Carrera, Vanderbilt center Damian Jones, Alabama guard Retin Obasohan, Georgia guard J.J. Frazier and Arkansas center Moses Kingsley.

Sophomore center John Egbunu (11.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and freshman guard KeVaughn Allen (11.5 ppg, 2.6 rpg) have an outside shot of making the All-SEC second team. Allen should be one of eight players picked for the All-SEC freshman team.
