Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 97-68 win over UNF

Some observations following Florida’s 97-68 win over UNF in its NIT opener on Tuesday night.

– Credit Florida sophomore center John Egbunu through fighting through a torn ligament in his right thumb for a third straight game on post a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds), albeit against an undersized UNF frontline. Egbunu will have surgery to repair the thumb on Thursday and will be shut down for the rest of the season. The 6-foot-11, 249-pound Nigeria native posted six double-doubles on the season and showed progress as a post scorer as the year progressed, posting a season-high 27 points on March 1 against Kentucky. He’ll be a major building block for the Gators moving forward.

– It was strange to see Florida sophomore forward Devin Robinson foul out of the game. It was the first time this season and just the third time in his career that Robinson had fouled out (as a freshman last season Robinson fouled out against Kansas and North Carolina). Robinson had 10 points and 2 rebounds in 22 minutes. Fortunately for Florida, junior forward Justin Leon picked up the slack with Robinson in foul trouble, going 3 of 5 from 3-point range and finishing with 9 points and 3 assists. Leon broke out out of a 1-for-17 slump from beyond the arc going into the game.

– When Florida cooled off from 3-point range in the second half (4-for-14, after going 12-of-18 in the first half), the Gators were still able to score through sound ball movement. Sophomore point guard Chris Chiozza had 7 assists and as a team, Florida finished with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 23 to 10.
