Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from Florida’s 88-66 win over Kentucky

Some observations following UF’s 88-66 win over Kentucky at the O’Connell Center:

— Give Florida credit for getting back on transition defense and limiting Kentucky’s ability to convert on the break. Although the Gators turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, Kentucky only cashed in with five points off turnovers in the first half. For the game, Florida outscored Kentucky 18-8 in fast break points.

— Florida backup center Kevarrius Hayes had an interesting line against the Wildcats — 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 fouls. But it was Hayes’ three blocked shots that provided a spark, particularly in the first half. As a team, Florida had seven blocks and protected the rim well.

— Canyon Barry remains instant offense for the Gators off the bench with 14 points in 18 minutes. Barry is improving defensively as well, as evidenced by forcing a travel on Kentucky guard Isaiah Briscoe late in the first half. Barry went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line to extend his streak to 31 straight from the line. His last miss came Jan. 7 against Georgia.
