Some observations following Florida’s 82-77 loss at George Washington on Wednesday night:
– For as well as the Gators played offensively throughout the game, they took some questionable shots down the stretch. Two that stood out — a deep 3-point attempt by senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith with Florida trailing 74-73 with under two minutes left and a long mid-range jumper attempt by Devin Robinson with the Gators down 78-74 and under a minute to go. In both instances, Florida would have been better served trying to attack the basket. With the loss, the Gators finished their first season under head coach Mike White with a losing record (5-6) in games decided by 5 points or less.
– Defensively, Florida switched from man to zone defenses throughout the game, but ultimately, had no answers to stop center Kevin Larsen (19 points, 13 rebounds) and forward Tyler Cavanaugh (23 points). George Washington outrebounded Florida 40-35 and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. While Florida progressed offensively late in the season under White, the Gators regressed defensively, allowing 80 or more points in four of their final nine games.
– A pair of freshman played well for Florida in its season finale. Freshman guard KeVaughn Allen finished with 22 points, while freshman Kevarrius Hayes matched his career high with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Allen and Hayes will be important players for the Gators to build around in future seasons.
