Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from Florida’s 82-72 win over Missouri

Some observations following Florida’s 82-72 win over Missouri on Saturday night:

– Florida coach Mike White didn’t have a problem with the Gators launching 32 3-point attempts against Missouri. The reason? Missouri was parked in a 2-3 zone for most of the game, and rather than drive against the zone and possibly turn the ball over, he felt the safer play was to take 3s and go for offensive rebounds. “As a team that drives to the basket, we’re a work in progress,” White said. The end justified the means. Florida had only 7 turnovers and allowed just 8 points off turnovers. The Gators shot just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc (9-32) but hit some timely 3-pointers.

– Overall, the point guard play of Chris Chiozza and Kasey Hill was much improved against Missouri compared to the Kentucky game. The duo combined for 26 points on 8 of 14 shooting and 5 of 10 shooting from 3-point range. With Chiozza out with leg cramps, Hill hit a big 3-pointer to put Florida up 75-59 with 4:18 left, giving the Gators enough cushion to close out the game.

– Congrats to Florida sophomore center John Egbunu for posting his school-record 67th dunk in the first half. Egbunu had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots and did a good job containing Missouri center Ryan Rosburg (11 points) on his emotional senior night. Egbunu could have had a bigger day, but after making his first four free-throw attempts, he missed four of his next five from the line.
