2016 F Rowan says Gators are “great option”

Maverick Rowan lit up the scoreboard this weekend in Lakeland, leading Cardinal Gibbons High to its first state title in school history.

And the 6-foot-7, 2016 wing prospect from Fort Lauderdale indicated that he wouldn’t mind staying in state to play for the Gators. Rowan, the 26th ranked player in the Class of 2016 according to ESPN.com, has already received a scholarship offer from Florida coach Billy Donovan.

“It’s a great school and they have a good guy in Billy Donovan,” Rowan told Gainesville Sun prep writer Larry Savage on Saturday. “He does a great job along with (Florida assistant) coach (Matt) McCall, who I talk to a lot. They are struggling a little this year. They have had some great players in the past that are similar to me. They are a great option for me.”

It won’t be an easy recruitment for the Gators. Rowan has received more than a dozen offers from schools around the country since he de-committed from Pittsburgh, including Louisville, North Carolina State and Wisconsin. In-state programs Florida State and Miami also have offered. Rowan scored 26 points in Gibbons’ 74-58 Class 5A state title win over Tallahassee Rickards on Saturday. On Friday, with Louisville coach Rick Pitino watching in the stands, Rowan scored 34 points in Gibbons’ 73-38 state semifinal win over St. Petersburg-Gibbs.

Rowan is considered a versatile wing with an inside-out game, similar to the mold of former Gator standout Chandler Parsons. He’s taking an official visit to Louisville on March 7 and there’s no word yet if and when he’s taking an official visit to see the Gators. He told SNY.tv that his priority is to go somewhere where he can get immediate playing time and play in March “when it matters.”
