Today’s essay question, starting with this proposed quote:
“I THINK we got the right guy after all…After EVERYTHING…”
Discuss.

…Okay, I’ll go first:

Since this IS filed under the heading entitled, “Stating the OBVIOUS”, let us begin with what had been for weeks, MONTHS leading up to and especially AFTER the firing of Billy Napier the one name that “everyone”—certainly most of us comprising “Gator Nation at Large”—simply ASSUMED was not just “The Guy”, he was the ONLY “GUY”: Yeah, the once (if anything) controversial, often even reviled, “Loudmouth Lane Kiffen”!
But HE had seen his image dramatically changed, upgraded, somewhat “cleaned” —I mean “PRESSED, STARCHED AND REPACKAGED”—in our collective estimation by the time this discussion arrived under a front-page headline in the “Nation”s assumed list of “potential alternatives”…
It was “LANE” (in large letters) and “everyone else” (in minuscule ones), whispered afterthoughts…
Right up until suddenly he WASN’T—by his own hand, it seemed, right at The End, when in a strange flurry of confused disappointment, this strange bundle of Tasmanian Devil-like ball of supercharged hyper-ENERGY appeared in the doorway of a transport plane on the tarmac at the local airfield…
“Jon Sumrall” his name:
Doing the Gator Chomp before descending the stairway rolling up to the plane, the at-that-point-still-much-maligned-and-blamed Florida A.D. grinning widely and waiting to welcome him at the bottom—an image now already burned into our minds as possibly the most powerful and memorable moment of POSITIVE REVERSAL since the arrival of either of the two previous National Championship-claiming Coaches who “came, saw and CONQUERED!” our by now hardened, cynical Gator-HEARTS.
Man, how much THAT has changed: The Nation has, for the most part and to a great extent, totally BOUGHT IN, it seems.
And why not?
Our new Coach said the right things, made the right “declarations”, then proceeded to make GOOD ON THEM ALL, one-by-one:
He “retained” the players he (and most of US) explicitly targeted as “gotta hold onto!”. In the “gray areas”, he addressed the “tough choices” and handled even those with what turned out to be transparency and a certain basic “class”—the “toughest” perhaps being DJ, whom (by all accounts) was given a clear and supportive CHOICE of paths (…along lines of, “In or out—your choice: but you have to CHOOSE it, WANT it, WORK for it…” Nothing was “automatic”, for ANYONE).
I’m sorry, but after everything we’d seen, generally and personally, specifically—as in “recent performances”—well, could it be any other WAY? Jones was confidently willing to fight; apparently DJ and family had other considerations…Sooooo:
Best of luck, young man.
But we kept the Main Five, the consensus “core” of MOST TALENTED “likeliest potential future stars” (some said to be headed for the portal, some to the draft, but in the end all 5 elected to stick with the “new regime”, after “focused personal attention”).
And these “new guys”, by more and more consensus in each case, for various reasons “the RIGHT guy for the job”, stepped in, stepped up and proceeded to DO HIS JOB, do it WELL.
There’s a “New Buzz” in G-Ville.
And it is notable that more’n’more “OLD” is seemingly being “called back”, WELCOMED Back to feel it, contribute to it in their own way somehow themselves.
Some officially, as part of the staff, but to a great extent it goes much further: Online and I think soon enough in the stands and at bars, clubs and watch-parties Saturdays throughout the land.
