Week 2–Here Comes a Flashy (and still needed) Tune-Up

Let’s all remember that this didn’t look like such a comfortable “tune-up”—against what was at the time of scheduling a well-coached team that had some really solidly successful seasons under its belt—In Fla., yes, but nonetheless “on the road” at their place down in Tampa. It may feel more like a home game to us now, or at least more evenly balanced a crowd when it kicks off at 1pm Eastern Saturday than it might have been, but considering how much Week 1’s game left us to work out before facing the Tide NEXT week, I’m not that disappointed. It should serve our purposes and still allow us to get out of there with a solid victory—at least one would hope.
If E- sets us up with an appropriately solid “Game Day” thread elsewhere here for this one, with his usual fine overview and caveats going in, I promise to look for, find and participate this time!
So many questions still to answer! And somehow I sense they’ll remain mainly unanswerable, considering our next opponent—even at home for that one.
Oh well: It will be interesting to see what we got, what we show against the Bulls THIS weekend in Tampa! I am REALLY looking for a solid game by all units, beginning to end. There’ll be those who would favor a continued more “vanilla” approach on offense, for example, if only to show Saban and Co. as little as possible...but I suspect after LAST week’s unevenness that it is more important to get various aspects of certain individuals’ game, and the offensive variety as a whole more strongly exercised.
In short, I hope and frankly somewhat EXPECT to see a bit of a lopsided blowout here, somewhere in the area of say
45-10.

Agreed especially since the Bulls lost 45-0 and their also have questions in the QB position as well. Also, considering that usually that Bulls game 20K-30K (closer to 20K). I went to the Wisconsin game in 2019 where it was more of a crowd than usual. I'm guessing it will be 60K with mostly Gator fans.

To be honest, the thing that is bothering ALL of us has been manifest in various comments on Twitter and YouTube Gator sites this past week...
I don’t usually put much store in all of that, but we’re already on edge regarding what kind of season this is about to be, and meanwhile at least so far we have had so little concrete evidence either way.
What everyone has so uniformly seen and commented on has been all the ways Emory has so far failed to go through his check downs, recognize what the defense was giving him, nor find and hit the open guy—and then not putting the ball to the receiver when he DOES choose where it ideally needs to go. Sure, we were spoiled by Trask’s proficiency in these areas LAST season, but we were COUNTING on Jones having settled in with a basic general competence and familiarity in these areas by now. Add in an apparent “ahead-of-schedule” performance by A.R. in the same opening game and of COURSE we find ourselves with a certain “edge” (bordering on hysteria?) on the various comment sites in the aftermath.
Well, young Mr. Jones has put himself in the “pressure spotlight” now; if it was a “case of nerves”, here’s his chance to turn it all around right away!
I foresee Coach giving him every opportunity to do just that. We’ll see A.R. some more too, but unless Emory seems to totally succumb early on, I have a feeling Mullens will do all he can in the game plan etc. to give him a chance to wash all that away...but it will be up to Emory to actually come through—run the current offense (which will include more ground game anyway) well AND have a chance to more deftly and efficiently convert key passing plays.
If there’s anyone who knows how to prepare a starting QB and put him in position to succeed in just this way, it is Dan Mullens—so at least for THIS week, I am fairly confident that we will see a more relaxed and smoothly executing Emory Jones.
If not, I think we’ll then HAVE to worry.
I think we’ll know early:
One thing I’ll be looking for in our first drives are opportunities for Emory to THROW RECEIVERS OPEN.
I expect Mullens to put him in exactly the situations that call on him to do so early, as I say.
Assuming he executes such opportunities with calm accuracy for big gainers and I think we’ll be able to give a sigh of relief, sit back and enjoy a proper “tune-up”!
