Florida play Notre Dame in 2031 and 2032

Florida is 0-1 all-time against Notre Dame, with that loss coming in the 1992 Sugar Bowl when #18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-3) defeated the #3 Florida Gators 39-28. The Gators were leading the Irish 19-17 at the beginning of the fourth quarter until the two teams continued trading scores until MVP Jerome Bettis sealed a Notre Dame victory. At the time, Gators QB Shane Matthews set a longstanding record for passing yards (370) and completions (28).

The next decade-plus of non-conference, FBS opponents (not counting FSU) features some interesting match-ups:

That ‘92 game was the one where the Spurrier-coached Gators HAD the lead and the Notre Dame offense stifled in the first half—until Irish Coach Lou Holtz completely reorganized his team’s approach on BOTH sides of the ball for the 2nd half...It was masterful: they didn’t’t actually overtake us on the scoreboard until the 4th quarter, but I remember thinking (with a mixture of both frustration and respect) from early in the 3rd quarter on that “the wise old owl of a Coach was SCHOOLING the young ‘wunderkind’ in the 2nd half”; the writing was on the wall well before it showed in the score!”
However, have been waiting on a proper rematch ever since. We can only hope our team and program has reached and remains at another one of its development peaks when it comes around in another ten years!

The way things are going now in college football, we can assume with 50% probability that Brian Kelly and Dan Mullen will not be coaching against each other in 10 years. Who knows where these programs will be in 10 years when we have insane Gator fans already calling for Dan Mullen to be fired over trial B.S. Heck, in 10 years these games may not happen if the CFP is restructured in 2026.

I think it is a good thing that these games were scheduled, but 10 years in the future is a long time.

Yeah—I can’t imagine what even HALF that many seasons might bring in changes from here...Frankly, at this point I don’t CARE to either!
Sigh...As you specifically note, E—, given the absurd mob-think being purveyed by fans on (“anti-“)social media nowadays, ridiculous bs proposed by people who appear to have about as much brains and depth as those cutout “fans” of late so ubiquitous in stands at stadiums, if I bother to consider it, them and/or the reactionary “reason-reduced-to-a-chant” they are so quick to seize and spread, it seems only a narrow, focused version of where so much of public discourse has descended to in the last few years.
So no, I’d rather NOT “consider” it. Otherwise I’ll more and more find myself thinking unkind and less-than-generous thoughts, such as (for eg.) wishing maybe all the folks who refuse to wear masks because it somehow (say it with a simpering, nails-on-glass whine) “violates their freedoms” will themselves be the first to die, be wiped out en masse—and the rest of us can just get on with rebuilding a better world where we can all just return to our respective efforts in “pursuit of happiness”.
Sorry. I am just so sick of self-indulgent blindness that ignores our responsibilities to EACH OTHER, in a complex world getting more crowded and dangerous all the time. None of this “works” without the minimal “social contract”—the implicit assumption that, for example you don’t just hit the gas at a red light because you’re tired of waiting; or, if maybe you won’t stick your neck out for someone, neither do you have an angry, sick or shallow secret desire to damage or ruin others for some obscure reason either.
Forgive me if I continue to hold onto at least a shred of all the reasons I love sport as a (once young and barely competent) player and a fan who therefore knows the genuine article when I see it played well, who understands the bond of team play—has seen, felt and LIVED it on a battlefield and who therefore values and embraced it all the more on the PLAYING field...and finds its expression on Saturdays in the SEC both a satisfying and relatively civilized manifestation of our natural human nature and tribalism.
All of which is an overanalytical rationale for my growing resentment at how various of what I see as our most valuable and cherished institutions being threatened by mindless selfishness and basic consideration (AND APPRECIATION) of our fellows, and THEIR lives.

I'm thinking more than 50%, will Brian Kelly coach at 70? and Dan Mullen well, might pull a McElwain.

In what way, Lf? “Pull a McElwain”, that is? Are you hinting at a possible deterioration in his principals and/or behavioral standards? Some kind of betrayal of his team and colleagues, for whatever personally flawed or innate, paranoia-based demons erupting from inside, inevitably manifesting themselves?
Or is there something else you sense on the horizon, beginning to emerge?
Or simply that he’ll find a reason to leave, for WHATEVER ostensible reason?
Perhaps I’m fooling myself, refusing to see even certain “cracks” in simpler terms (for eg, the retention of Grantham—which, though admittedly questionable, still strikes one as the result of our Coach’s acknowledged sense of trust, patience and loyalty)...I’ve been guilty of this (excessive trust—seeing the best in a Coach’s early going) before, after all.
But I still believe in our current Head Coach—take him at his word and thus far clearly stated dreams and goals for this team and program as a position and job he wanted more than all others, his work here (to establish and install UF Football as THE “Elite” Program in the SEC) far from finished as of yet, obviously.
Looking back, it is clear that such vision and lofty goal was NEVER a conscious, realistic determination set for himself on McElwain’s part! Indeed, in retrospect it seems he saw little here but a chance at a quick increase in pay grade and a chance at more transient glory than he’d otherwise achieve elsewhere. His thin spine and thick personality flaws were therefore, not surprisingly, quickly revealed, as it turned out.
I’m certainly hoping, and continue to believe that Mullen is made of much sterner stuff.

I doubt Mullen pulls a McElwain and fakes death threats against his players and his family. That crap had better be a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. I was in Gainesville and the surrounding area for a business trip during that time. McDeathThreats was using the situation as an excuse to get out. If Mullen wants out, he can get out just by going to the NFL as an offensive coordinator. It would be a pay cut, but he could get out.

Brian Kelly will be turning 70 in 2031, and will have been at Notre Dame for 21 years at that point. Coaches nowadays do not tend to stay in place this long, and there are no signs that this will change in the next few years. Dan Mullen, on the other hand, will only be 58 and will "only" have been at Florida just over 12 years. If he can get the Gators to the CFP in the next couple years and not let the program implode, he could still be coaching at Florida in 2031-2032. I may be in the minority here, but I do believe that he will fix recruiting to a level that is close enough for him to keep his job.

I am also in the minority in supporting Mullen's decision to keep Grantham. If there were another defensive coordinator on the market, then I would be fine with Mullen firing Grantham. I thought I had posted on this earlier, but it turns out that I only posted it to my personal blog and on my other forums. Here is my support of Mullen's decision to keep Grantham on DRU's post: https://www.gatorenvy.com/threads/the-grantham-question.20769/.

I have to support your reasoning here, E-. Certainly, among “logical lines of thought”, yours is most hopeful.
I WANT you to be right in your thinking and resulting well-made points.
After all, I was among those who just a season earlier thought Grantham was doing amazingly well with a less-than-first-grade defensive line up or depth. For a while there we had a “pressure defense”; something anything in the same area of effectiveness this last season would have gotten us to the playoffs—maybe even the “last game” (we saw it in the SEC Championship AGAINST the eventual Champs).
So YES: If the Emory Jones-led offense indeed turns out to be the manifestation of what Coach has been building towards, and the D shows a certain level of “efficient recovery” of what we saw hints and promises of the season before, this debate could mainly disappear in the rear view rather quickly after all.
Here’s hoping.
