#17 Donald Reche Caldwell (March 28, 1979 - June 6, 2020) of Tampa, Florida played wide receiver for Steve Spurrier‘s Florida Gators from 1998 to 2001. Before signing with the Gators he was drafted by the Cincinatti Reds. Reche was Honorable Mention All American, 2nd Team All SEC, and a Fred Biletnikoff finalist. Reche finished his career with 141 receptions, 2088 yards (14.8 avg) and 18 touchdowns while returning 5 punts for 49 yards and completing one pass for 9 yards. At the time, he was only one of nine Gators with 1,000 yards receiving in a season.

Reche was a second round pick by the the San Diego Chargers in the 2002 NFL draft. Trivia: the pick that San Diego used to select Reche came from a 2001 trade that sent the number one pick to the Atlanta Falcons for Michael Vick. He played for the Chargers until 2005 before rounding out his career with a year with the New England Patriots (2006), Washington Redskins (2007), and St Louis Rams (2008). Reche ran a small business in his hometown of Tampa before he ran into trouble with the law and spent some time in a minimum security prison and finally returning home to Tampa to live the quiet life. Trivia note: Reche is the older brother of fellow Gator Andre “Bubba” Caldwell (2003-2007).

I admit I remember his brother more than him though him and Jabar Gaffney along with Rex Grossman nearly led the Gators to a title in 2001 if not for Bid Laden :)devilish: him). Sad that him and Gaffney didn't have better NFL careers especially after that :devilish: Brady whined about getting good receivers (and yet I have to support Brady because he's the Bucs QB now). RIP and I hope they catch the guy killed him.

This was especially sad, given the larger context that has tainted recent social events and commentary...My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family—and beyond to our GATOR family as well; we, too, are ALL poorer for his loss, even BEFORE taking into account the reality of another tragic, violent death “in the hood”, sounds like. I admit I have little further detail at the moment...It behooves ALL OF US to follow up, at least to continue our focus on the aftermath and further investigation as to the nature and details of the crime...It just isn’t enough anymore (if it EVER was) to shake our heads and move on...ALL part of the growing idea at large that “ALL LIVES MATTER”.
AND he was a GATOR, after all!
