The Ghost of Urban Meyer Haunts Again

In case you HAVEN’T heard, and it should come as no SHOCK in any event, but Urban’s name is being whispered in the halls and surrounding environs out in the panhandle: Yes, he has supposedly been contacted (and though refusing PUBLIC comment thus far, hasn’t dismissed outright—and we ALL know how fast these things can happen, too: A bright and powerful media spotlight plus BOATLOADS OF CASH are EXACTLY THE WAY you get Urban Meter’s attention—and it’s not as if ANYONE at or from UF ever bought into the latest “I’m done with coaching, absolutely FINISHED...” any more than we did or do that other “go-to whopper: “I have two ladies at home I have to answer to on this one—and they are CLEAR!” He’s referencing his wife and eldest daughter, and we’ve already seen how large and unyielding “obstacles THEY are. Not.)
No—I figure that if anywhere, USC seems the best Fit—he can be the bigger hero faster, with more money and a clearer road to his seductive recruiting talents in that Southern California environment at USC—That's the ONLY reason I doubt we’ll find ’ meeting up with another soon-to-be HATED-all-the-MORE ex-Gator-Coach on a regular basis anytime soon,;but with the OTHER “garnet and gold courting him quietly and subtly out west, that just seems more likely.
Be glad. Be very glad: For if it were to come down to it, that’s one game every now and then—one big “Matchup for the Ages” as they will cover it—Oh, it’ll be a terrible pain in the ASS, and y’all know it—mainly just relief if/when we beat them, and utter hell for at KEAST a year following a (heaven forBID it!) a loss to them the first timeout!
Yikes!!! I can’t believe I voluntarily addressed this foolishness here and now, but I was reading all about the background here, how there was a big push on from panicked FSU boosters, and for whatever fluke reasons, it supposedly “could happen NOW”, that with a push here and a “maybe we can talk” there, a transfer in Atlanta on his way from where he’d was to where he’s going and that leaves a private jet waiting for him on the runway right as he’s about to have a layover in Atlanta, Soooooo...” Stupid kind of story that takes on a life of its own, get it?
Me, I HATE IT, dread it. We Do NOT want that. I believe the last skill our Coach needs in his quiver is the ability to seduce and land the Big Time 5-star...not sure I necessarily even WANT him to develop this in himself—it is DIFFERENT than the “whisperer”-thing, wherein he is able to promise and generally make good on promises to bring offensive players ALONG, help them find their best place on field and team and excell there...it is a different thing altogether to shower attention on that one gem, the kid who Knows WHO HE IS, what he’s got (lightening in a bottle, pouring down his arms and legs!), and the Coach from the very start, LNOWING he has been treated as “SPECIAL” now for many years, just makes it honestly clear to everyone, the player included, that he MEANS EVERYTHING HE SAYS TO HIM—“We are our to make this happen just like you dreamed of lying in bed with the posters on your walls and the signed football and all the rest, practically all his life this far—Urban can somehow make that kid think he’s been WAITING FOR HIM too! Even if he KNOWS that’s what’s going on from the start—Meyer somehow makes a FLAWED BEGINNING FUN AND SOMEHOW INTENTIONAL, to be laughed about...This requires aspects of personality that are often at ODDS with the parts that Build a TEAM...
So maybe this isn’t so much a matter of MULLENS CHANGING HIMSELF as him making some STAFF changes—perhaps HE needs to find “The Right Guy”—a “5-Star Whisperer”, if you will: the young guy who can step in and RELATE, somehow accomplish a level of rapport with a kid who has been at the center of that maelstrom of attention and constant compliments and stroking already for YEARS...He can maybe land that kid in such a way that he’s soon a Gator, but (for our purposes we’ll make our recruiter “Ron”) he is in fact “one of RONNI’S boys!” (Exclamation point intentional—but somehow WITHOUT disrupting team-unity, more another distinctive feature of being part of the “Gator family”, a further compliment, NOT a decisive feature that divides).
We already HAVE something like that on this team...There already are “Grantham’s Boys” on this unit: And their soaked butt-prints go up on the cabinet doors in the exercise break room—easier/safer to just avoid the “violation” in the first place”!!!
But back to the point: I’m all IN for a First Class, Full time “Recruiting Coordinator”—WhattayaTHINK?!!
Someone whose MAIN task, in truth, is going after and LANDING 5-Star Players—whereever, WHOMever they may‘’ they missed, and CONTINUE TO MISS some in every class. And if/when we think we our own thoughts, we LEAVE THE MAN ALONE TO DO HIS THING: From the moment he is hired, Judge him ONLY by his Results. Period.

I've heard the rumors myself. USC West is one of them. I would be Bleeping pissed off if he goes to that school out West. Spurrier to the Gamecocks would seem minor compared to Meyer going to SOW. Plus he would get a better foothold if he went to USC West especially with the Pac-12 the weaker conference of the major conferences. It's probably not a surprise hearing the rumors about Meyer wanting to come back and programs rumored to interested in Meyer especially after his first "retirement" then a year later went to the Ohio State. Granted OSU did all they could to prevent him from coaching elsewhere but ultimately if he's interested of coming back into coaching then he will coach again.

Do you think he is a little bit surprised at his “hand-picked replacement’s” actual real life success in Columbus? Was that supposed to be a tougher transition, a “good-but-not-GREAT” showing from opener to the wire??? I’m pretty sure they were all supposed to MISS Urban—NOT find themselves late in the season saying, “Alright! Nicely done: You KNEW what you were leaving in place and when it was time to go—and you DID: Thankyou, Loyal Favorite Son Urban Meyer!” ...Somehow, I just don’t see Urban Meyer having suddenly morphed into the Elder Statesman of ANYTHING; He wants to be remembered a certain way—and being “MISSED” is part of that.
In that light, if I had to pick a “next step”, I’d go with the one where he has a shot at brilliantly overshadowing WHATEVER is going on back at his “old job”...and the current OSU success only hastens his finding something that gives him that opportunity.

I would not get worked up over rumors. My favorite rumor is that Urban Meyer is going to the Dallas Cowboys. My next favorite is him going to USC. I will bet money that he is not going to FSU. Dallas and USC are the only jobs that make sense if Meyer chooses to coach again.

It is ALL “Comedy”, at this point; However, there IS an element of potentially self-inflicted trajedy ensuing up-the-road a ways...sort of a mish mash of “little boy-cries-wolf” and “careful-what-you-Wish-for!“

According to one half of the old Muppetts duo, he thinks that Notre Dame should buy out Brian Kelly and hire Meyer.
