Florida Gators 2013 Recruiting Class

Once the players start signing LOIs, I can start posting more details on each player. Three of the EEs plan on signing their LOIs before winter break so they can start class in January. There are another five EEs that may sign LOIs the first week of school. Once they sign the LOIs, they are officially Gators and we can start caring about them enough for each one to get his own thread for discussion.

Today marked the first day of early enrollment at Florida, and the Gators signed three of the seven EEs--OL Trenton Brown (6'8", 335, Nebraska and St. Petersburg CC), OL Tyler Moore (6'6", 310, Georgia Military College), Darious Cummings (6'2", 301, Florida State and East Mississippi College). Expect the other four EEs to sign between now an the first day of class in January--RB Kelvin Taylor, LB Daniel McMillian, LB Matt Rolin, and S Marcell Harris.

ALL of these are key recruits--by every sign or clue big-time players at some of our key positions-of-need.

Back on the thread topic, if Shariff Floyd enters the draft, the Gators will have 25 scholarships available. That means there is room for 25 recruits in 2013. Currently, we think we will have 25 on NSD, but anything can happen.

The math goes something like this, plus or minus a few.
The Gators end the 2012 academic year with 81 scholarships. Subtract Willie Bailey and Jafar Mann from the class of 2012, 8 graduating seniors, and 6 redshirt seniors that have exhausted eligibility. Subtract three preferred walk-on scholarships that are not guaranteed, and we have 65 scholarships. Subtract the recent announcement of Matt Patchan's and Pop Saunders' transfers and we have 63. That is 22 scholarships available in 2013, but we have a 24 or 25 verbals committed. Jeremy Brown and Kedric Johnson are expected to leave the program due to lack of playing time, and Shariff Floyd is expected to enter the NFL draft. This should have the Gators at 25 scholarships available.

Note: this thread is for discussion on the incoming class of 2013. Discussions on player transfers have been moved to a new thread. Matt Patchan's thread is [here].

Whatta ya wanna bet we make a full-on, hard-charge for Vonn Bell now--the high-rated and more-coveted-than-ever SAFETY from up-the-road in Rossville, GA? We're probably gonna have PLENTY of DBs--smaller/lighter/faster ones maybe "FORMER DBs", too, if necessary...but a rangier, highly athletic one who can lock up with their tall/fast/go-to WR is something EVERY defense covets--and we are no exception, less so than ever given our current situation.

To be honest, I have no idea how heavy the Gator coaches are pursuing players. They do a pretty good job of keeping these things private. Recruiting services are getting frustrated that their only leads tend to come from kids' Twitter and Facebook accounts. All those sports nuts paying for premium access to recruiting information are wasting their money, because Florida coaches are being sneaky.

That being said, since Vonn Bell was not invited to the senior banquet, I have no idea if he is being heavily pursued or not. I do know that most of the kids who were invited to the senior banquet have stayed firm with commitments to Florida, other than Quinton Powell.

You're right in your analysis of who we've shown how-much attention to, AND in the degree of frustration among those (I must agree, ridiculous-to-pay-for) "Recruiting Tracking Services"--and this is FAR from coincidence: Would it come as a real shock to learn that in these latter stages of the long process for this particular year's (ie. 2013) recruiting-class that consideration is given in ALL moves--INCLUDING, for example, who we invited to our "Senior Banquet", given the messages it sends--with an eye to NOT focussing attention on any late-in-the-day "adjustments" in what we "may be needing" after all, and WHO we're about to turn more of our attention on in order to FILL those needs? (If I go any further than posing that somewhat rhetorical question, I will be violating a promise I made to someone, so...) We've just had an all-too-chaotic-but-clear demo of what can happen when this sort of thing sees the light-of-day: That whole flip-flop-flip with the kid from Clemson is a lesson in how and why these things are better operated quietly, slowly, and "on the down-low"--you want to be the LAST "flip" or "flop", a lot likelier if it doesn't come out, at least how heavily you are pushing, 'til the very end.
(Even here, though--and this shows how crazy and strange this whole process has become--at the same time we fans were stressing over "losing out on another recruit to Clemson", the truth is that amongst our recruiting staff there were some relative BENEFITS here: For eg., turns out there is another, to-our-staff-at-LEAST-as-desirable prospect at that position who was worried about our taking both of them, but now is "quietly enthusiastic" in leaning towards us--apparently unbeknownst to a cross-state school that is still-confident in his one-time enthusiasm for THEIR program...That Gator Nation isn't hearing about this is "a GOOD thing", then: The idea, of course, is to leave "the OTHER guy" surprised and bummed-out on NSD.)

WR Demarcus Robinson, who previously committed to Clemson, then de-committed and committed to Florida, then de-committed to Florida to re-commit to Clemson only a day later has "re-de-committed" from Clemson to "re-re-commit" to Florida. Catch all that? He will be on campus at 4:30 to register for classes. This is the first week of classes, but drop/add goes on until the end of the week without penalty, or until next week with penalty (if you have ever suffered the wrath of UF registration for missing drop/add, you know what I am talking about).

Welcome to the Gator Nation, Demarcus!

Update:

Trenton Brown had some issues with his grades transferring in, so his early enrollment will start in the summer, not the spring.

Demarcus Robins is indeed on campus and sporting lots of Gator gear. He looks excited. My guess is that he secretly wanted to go to Florida, but mom and head coach kept pushing him to Clemson against Demarcus' wishes. In the end, it looks like a little extra nudge from one of the Florida coaches must have brought him to Gainesville.

Need to Update that Dominique Easley is returning for his Senior year. Probably the best news yet, considering that top HS defensive talent want to get on the field beside him and learn from the best. 2013 is looking good, I think VHIII is our best Defensive recruit so far, and Kelvin Taylor could be our best Offensive recruit.

I did get some more bits and pieces of both the Demarcus "Flip Flop Saga" and news on a handful of other out-of-state grabs that currently are being counted in OTHER schools' classes but that we are supposedly "real close to picking up", but until there is something more solid to report, I'm more-and-more inclined to leave it alone for now...This all well-demonstrates the crazy, vague and tenuous nature of the whole process, how elusive and strange the forces at work and weird world otherwise tough and pragmatic Coaches must enter and move in if they are to gather a decent recruiting-class together, and then bring it IN. Frankly, just talking about it, without being able to name player or school, feels kind of small, silly and petty, like high school gossip (it's certainly no more substantial at the pre-official stage)--so I can only imagine what it feels like to a tough and dignified adult-Coach. For myself, unless it is something REALLY noteworthy AND somewhat more concrete than these back-channel, "can't give the details yet" situations, I will stick to what I DO know:
It looks to be a good thing we still have some space for more scholarships, we may well fill the bulk of them before this is all done, and in addition to the ones we have and are in the final running for mostly IN-state, there are a number of widely-coveted out-of-state kids who are quietly "moving.."(or have "already moved")"...in our direction", and that these are ALL at "positions of need". All in all, even with just a few of these "last minute probablys", as far as prospects go this class is shaping up as amazing, better than could be hoped for or foreseen.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone just decommited from Notre Dame and will enroll early at Florida. Note that Anzalone had committed to tOSU and ND before making the final decision to Florida. I had him on our recruiting tracker the whole time, but never expected him to flip back to Florida. Tomorrow is the last day of drop/add on campus.

The last two recruits, Anzalone and Robinson, sure have been interesting. I hope they do great things on campus.

The next concern is how the other defensive recruits will view the addition of yet another linebacker. Expect one of the defensive recruits to flip to another school as we get a crowded class of 2013.

I have these guys listed on the first page as well, but look for de-commitments from some of the 3* guys that are getting bumped by new 4* players, and look for a last minute flip from at least one of these guys:
  • Elijah Daniel
  • Alex Collins
  • Jarran Reed
  • Jaynard Bostwick
  • Montravious Adams
  • James Clark
  • Chris Jones
  • Jalen Ramey
  • Mackensie Alexander
Some of these kids are committed elsewhere, but some are taking a visit this month before making final selection. The probability is low of snagging more than one of these. The probability is pretty high of losing one of the current 27 commitments, unless they are okay with playing behind a 4* stud.

...OR if they have the confidence (and possibly back-channel encouragement) that they are under-rated to start with, expect to continue growing, improving on top of THAT, and will come as long as we make room for them somehow to get a scholly and COMPETE--which, considering how recruiting is more "hit-or-miss" than "science", may often turn out to be exactly the kind of kid we WANT. Regardless, in this way we will reach or come CLOSE to reaching our limit this time--and that will include some "creative" work with the dates and rules and so on that supposedly constrict but in truth open-up some "flexibility" in those "limits" (which, given how these shift from year-to-year, may be better followed, taken into account and/or explained by E- once we get down to the end of the madness over the next couple-of-weeks).
Thing is, are "a couple/few extra spaces for later" more valuable in themselves, if not this year then next, than rejecting the "experts' ratings" and rolling-the-dice on supposed "lesser" 3-star talent now, if/when it comes down to that?
