Projected Depth Chart for 2014

Assuming we get back all of the injured players from this year, this is what I expect the opening day depth chart to look like. As of November 30 2013, we know that Loucheiz Purifoy has declared himself for the NFL Draft, so his name has been removed from the projected roster. As more players declare for the draft, I will adjust this projection,.

It appears that we mostly agree. My assumption is that Debose will lose a step due to repeated injury and become a backup kick and punt returner. I assume the new OC will go four wide and put him in at slot, unless he cleans up route running and moves to X.

I also foresee D. Rob and Morrison having discipline issues and struggling to make first team.

My guess is that Taylor will surpass Jones, but Jones will be a good change of pace back. There is nothing wrong with having multiple, talented backs. I remember Neal Anderson and John L. Williams back in the 1980s--both talented in college and both having good NFL careers.

The reason I've placed Taylor as the starter is because I am originally from Tampa, (currently in Huntsville, AL) and played high school football there in the late 90's. My high school and Matt Jones's high school has played each other many times in the past, matter of fact they're currently in the same division and lost to them in the second round of the playoffs this year. I've watched Matt Jones since his freshman year at Armwood High. In all four years of high school he has never started and finished a complete season due to injury. NEVER! I like workhorse Rd's that I can count on to be there every Saturday. Unfortunately, as we all know he had the virus issue at the beginning of fall camp. I can't fault him for that, then he tore his meniscus and was done for the year. All I could think about is every time I would read the paper he had some sort of nagging injury that just seemed to follow him the entire season. Another thing that bothers me about him is in high school be was about 6'1" 220lbs, that's absolutely huge for a high school RB. He would rarely use his size to his advantage, he would rather juke and try to run around defenders instead of over or through them. Keep in mind WM has twice had to sit him down and tell him to stop tip-toeing and hit the hole hard like a 6'2" 235lbs running back should. I don't think WM should have to have this talk a third time but I think he will, that's just how Matt runs. Also Mack Brown showed to me why he has never seen much playing time in his collegiate career. You would have to go back to the first game of the season when we played Toledo. There was a play early in the game where Mack busted loose for a run and was unable to outrun the defender from Toledo. They caught him from behind and run was only 25 to 30 yards. IMHO, my starting RB whose supposed to be a SEC caliber RB should never get caught from behind by a MAC defender. At that I knew deep down there was no way we could win the SEC with him getting the Lions share of the runs. I wanted KT to come out and get as many reps as possible so to get him comfortable and have him ready for the stretch run of the schedule because I knew at some point Matt Jones would get hurt and miss more time and Mack Brown just isn't the answer at RB.

Thanks for the information @roblou56 . Your frustration or disappointment with Matt Jones is similar to how I feel with Andre Debose and even Percy Harvin.

Harvin has only completed one season in the nfl free of injury--his rookie of the year season. If he would have worked harder in the gym and in practice as a Gator I think he would have helped the Gators win more games. Each injury increases the chance of injury for the fellow players left behind to pick up the slack. See 2007 and 2013. Now look at Harvin in the nfl. Compare this case to Debose and Jones. The more they get hurt, the more those left behind get hurt. This will translate in the nfl or wherever they go next.

Give me warriors like Tim Tebow (playing with a broken rib or leg), Kelvin Taylor (running up the middle despite lack of push from OL, Emmitt Smith (the only offensive weapon on the team, played injured in college and nfl).

Do not get me started on Percy and Andre. *Let me control my blood pressure*
I'm laughing ONLY 'cause at a certain point, it's that or SCREAM!!! So much, suggested, implied and referred to in that comment, Dale--both regarding the (too early and too extreme-in-their-optimism) comparisons themselves AND inn the way each individual in all cases have behaved and performed--for me t do anything BUT one or the other...

My guess is that Taylor will surpass Jones, but Jones will be a good change of pace back. There is nothing wrong with having multiple, talented backs. I remember Neal Anderson and John L. Williams back in the 1980s--both talented in college and both having good NFL careers.
We should all pray to The Football Gods that THAT comparison/parallel holds true!!!

(Also, @roblou56, re HIS comments on the RBs here: I couldn't agree more...whereas Jones DOES have a different, potentially more "smashmouth"-style than RT, and (a E- notes would/will(?) ) make an excellent change-of-pace in our running game, I too have ALWAYS felt Taylor was our hope and future at the RB position.)

Also for 1982 to 1984 there was Hampton in the mix as well, also a first round pick but didn't have the pro career that Williams and Anderson did

Ronald Powell and Marcus Roberson have both declared for the draft. Very interesting depth chart, I agree for the most part except for the secondary. Well, you have Roberson up there without knowing he declared so obviously it's an exception. But I personally think it'll look something like this:
CB1: Vernon Hargreaves
CB2: Brian Poole
CB3: Cody Riggs
FS: Jabari Gorman
SS: Marcus Maye

Also, don't be surprised if Nick Washington and Marcell Harris get significant playing time this year, especially if Washington is healthy. Great depth chart, looking forward to seeing how Driskel fares in an offense that's going to be built around his skill set; something that should've been done from Day 1.

Good analysis! I posted that depth chart back on December 1st during the Gators' Sit-at-Home-for-Six-Months Bowl game assuming that RoPo and Roberson sucked way too much this year to declare for the NFL Draft. Note that I still have Tyler Murphy on there as well.

RoPo could have taken advantage of a full year at BUCK hybrid under Will Muschamp and get that experience that pushed Brian Orakpo over the top at UTx. RoPo's injuries seemed to slow him down in the bulking up and healing processes. I understand that he wants to avoid another year of bad luck injuries, but he will have his work cut out for him bulking up. His weight has been listed between 230 and 240. He needs to be at 250 as a OLB, 275 as a DE, or somewhere in between as a dedicated BUCK (or several fractions of a second faster in the 40 for every few pounds under that range).

Roberson will probably fare better in the NFL at first as long as he remembers to snap his head around and hawk the ball down as CB. The NFL could just make him a safety, but he would need to bulk up a bit and work on tackling technique under these strict NFL rules.

Either way, I will update the projected depth chart once the roster settles down a bit and we can all discuss what we think.

I think kicker Danny Krysalka will be an asset to the team this coming season, if the coach will give him a chance. The boy has a leg and is good!

We need something to talk about amongst us five posters on the forum. Besides, I track the players through the offseason so I do not have to put up with people's incorrect assumptions during the season. Other Gator sites tend to track players until the end of the football season, and assume everyone not on the roster on opening day has been arrested, or has transferred to Boston College. That gets old. Here you can find the rest of the story.

I specifically posted my projected line-up to illustrate the kind of players that we had returning for next year. Note that a smaller percentage of the projected starters here are blue chip players compared to years past. Add in the new recruits from signing day, and one can guess how many freshmen are going to see the field rather quickly.
