One more month until the Orange and Blue Debut! Here is a summary of the past 17 years of the Orange and Blue Debut. In some years these games are glorified practices, but in some years these games do give hint of things to come. For example, the 2006 O&B Debut gave us a glimpse of Tim Tebow's passing as he passed for 197 yards compared to Chris Leak's 145. In 2007, Cam Newton outperformed Tim Tebow in both the 2007 and 2008 games. Oddly enough, John Brantley IV outperformed Tebow in 2009. On the other hand, these games sometimes fail to give us a preview of what will happen in the regular season. Under Muschamp these spring games did not seem to matter. The 2013 game was not even a scrimmage.
Based on what we know of Napier's spring game at Louisiana we can expect to see good-on-good in the Orange and Blue Debut, and we will likely see action from all six quarterbacks so that Napier can complete his evaluations and begin processing transfers and position changes. In 2021's Vermilion vs White game, Louisiana QB Levi Lewis finished 15-26 for 167 yards and drove the team to a game-winning, 51-yard field goal from kicker Kenneth Almendares. Backup QB Chandler Fields finished 12-15 for 136 yards. Running backs Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas had good games, as well as linebacker Joe Dillon. Not that Gator fans should care about Louisiana football, but Mitchell could get drafted ahead of Dameon Pierce based on his excellent Pro Day results, including a blazing 4.32 40-yard dash. Ragas ran a 4.68, but is known more as a short-yardage back. Levi Lewis is projected as an NFL breakout player, even if it means a potential position change for the 5'10" QB.
