Undefeated against collegiate competition after the first three meets of her career, University of Florida jumps specialist Liene Karsuma (Riga, Latvia) was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Tuesday in an announcement by the league office.
Karsuma won the high jump at last weekend’s United Heritage Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, with a career-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1.78m/5-10. The mark, which currently ranks third in the SEC and 11th in the NCAA, is a UF freshman record and moved her into fifth on the school’s all-time indoor list.
After capturing an outright victory in the high jump at the season-opening Big Ten/SEC Classic, Karsuma has finished as the top collegian at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic and the United Heritage Invitational in consecutive outings.
The selections mark the third-straight week in which the Gators have collected an SEC honor, and their fifth accolade of the 2008 season. Sophomore Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) collected Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 29, while junior Beau Burroughs (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) swept the men’s awards on Jan. 22.
UF will be idle this weekend, and will return to action at the Iowa State Classic from Feb. 15-16 in Ames, Iowa.
