Grades in for UF's backfield signees - B+

BACKFIELD

The signees: Jeff Demps, 5-foot-8, 162 pounds, Groveland South Lake; T.J. Pridemore, 6-1, 228, Buford, Ga.

The star:
Demps may have been the fastest recruit in the nation and could play a role in the spread offense similar to Percy Harvin. Demps can line up at tailback and in the slot, and he may have a chance to return kicks as a true freshman.

The sleeper:
Pridemore earned his tough-guy reputation playing middle linebacker in high school, but the Gators plan to use this physical guy as a blocking fullback. Pridemore will be the only scholarship fullback on the roster in the fall, so there's a chance he could be an immediate contributor if he picks up the offense quickly in August.

One that got away:
Darrell Scott, Ventura, Calif. Actually this five-star back didn't get away because he never even made it to Gainesville on an official visit. Originally from Florida, Scott favored the Gators early in the recruiting process but never really formed a bond over the final months. The UF coaches cooled considerably on Scott due to a questionable work ethic.

Grade:
B+ The Gators failed to sign a feature back, but Demps is a potential gamebreaker with his speed and versatility, and Pridemore fills a huge need at fullback.

Top target in 2009?
Rodney Scott, 5-9, 185, Dixie County High School. Scott rushed for 2,017 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior and is expected to be an elite prospect next season. He's been timed at 4.41 in the 40-yard dash, and he already has offers from Florida State and Miami, his current leader.
