"No. 9 Florida bounced back from its opening loss at the Southeastern Conference tournament with a 12-2 victory in eight innings against No. 7 Mississippi in Hoover, Ala. The Gators had 15 hits, including three home runs, in the eight-inning game, which was shortened because of a 10-run mercy rule.
The victory was UF's first in the postseason under coach Kevin O'Sullivan, and it bolstered the Gators' chances of earning a national seed, given to the top eight teams in the nation.
''We didn't talk about [a national seed Thursday] this morning, but we did before we came up here,'' O'Sullivan said. ``That's one thing I've been really honest about and tried to explain to them so they know what's in front of them. I let them know what's at stake and what we're playing for.''
``We obviously can't control the committee and what they feel, but this was a step in the right direction.''
